Wood boring insect
I have some insects you cannot see with the naked eye that are boring small pin head sized holes in a wooden tabletop winerack and wooden back barstools. I had the same problem with a wooden mask I had bought. They don't bother any of my other wooden items. I don't know what they're called but I would like any ideas as to how to treat the wood to prevent them from doing any further damage. The set is stained and finished but no laquer or shellack on it. Does anyone know where I could purchase a decent polyeurethane for furniture or laquer that would keep them away or any other idea how to stop them? Thanks.

Ask the hardware store a product to kill polilla then apply it to the wood. That stuff is pretty toxic, follow the instruction. Check with Prisa as well they may have some.. For the mask if you can put itin your freezer for a few days it will kill them.

Yes, I believe they are a small wood boring beetle. I had the same problem with a mask. They left a white powdery residue by the little pin holes. I put the mask in the freezer for a couple of days and no more beetles.

yes the freezer is the bestIn California I had an African pieces that was infected and I asked the butcher to put it in his cold room. I wrapped the piece in pastic and he put it in his freezer..It is the easiest way to kill them . They are not easy to get rid off otherwise.

What you have is "Powder Post beetles". They come to be in your house from natural wooden items that you buy and bring home, like a wooden mask or things made of reeds, woven baskets, woven place mats etc.. They are very difficult to eliminate, took me about two years to get them out of my house. What finally worked for me was to put the infected items in plastic bags, spray them extensively with an insecticide, then close up the bag and leave it in the hot sun for several days. They only effect the wooden items that are left natural, if they have a coating on them like varnish then they seem to go to easier to get at wood.

Tey are endemic in CHiapas and we inject the mata polilla product with a needle in every hole where the bugs are active and cover the wood with the same product. As the houses there are like the ones in Patzcuaro the bugs are endemic and it is an on going battle. The product is extremely toxic. I had all the ceilings done and the man doing it refuse to wear a mask and got very sick. Do it in a well ventilated area do not breath that stuff , it is really nasty.
The plastic wrapping is a good idea if the pieces are small enough.

My problem was that they came with my equipales furniture. I found large plastic black bags and the chairs just fit in them. Sealed them up in the sun and cooked the beetles out of them.

great idea, you might have been able to add them to some of your tacos, I heard insects are high in protein.
