Cafe Magana
Jeffrey asked me to post this message:
I want to inform your members that Cafe MaGaÑa in Riberas is now closed. Dwindling returns from not so high, high seasons and the mandatory denuincias from staff made it smarter to close than to suffer any more.
A big bazaar will follow any minute now.
In place of the Cafe a super healthy pet food factory has opened; Cat.Dog.Biz. with ancestral diet food and products needs the support of you pet owners. your pets will thank you too.
Thank you to all our fans, you were sweethearts, cheers, Jeffrey

What is a "mandatory denuincia"?

Did Jeffrey say what he is doing about/with his book exchange?

denuncia.....
Probably finiquitos for termination of employment, which would only increase with time.

I believe he is going to sell all the books. That is the "big bazaar" he is referring to in his message.
Re: Cafe Magana
You would think that someone who has been doing business in Mexico as long as he has would know the difference between a denuncia and a finiquito.slainte39 wrote:gringal wrote:What is a "mandatory denuincia"?

That's what was confusing. Thanks.

It is confusing with that description, unless......
there is something more, like wages not paid, turned into loans or other financial "arrangements" that could lead to criminal charges by someone. I offered finiquitos as the least problematic explanation, and any further opinion would be speculation.
Probably a poor choice of words by Mr. Rafferty.

Re: Cafe Magana
A denuncia is a complaint, but the word the op wrote was denuincia which may be something else. Never heard of a mandatory complaint so hopefully someone can come up with a different meaning with the op's spelling.

I think it was a misspell.
A denuncia is a criminal complaint, a demanda is a civil complaint.

I will miss the food and all the signs reminding me that certain tables are for minimum 3 people and where to throw my paper in the wash room.

Has anyone tried the cat food? I was not a fan of his people food nor his signs. Wonder if I should let the gato's try his offerings.

Have you seen the new signs regarding cat behavior? If you think policing people was difficult....try cats.

Re: Cafe Magana
On TOB someone said Jeffery was looking for someone to take over the book exchange OR the books would be sold. Perhaps an enterprising restaurant with some extra wall space or a non-profit who could charge a small fee????

I will very much miss Jeffrey and his restaurant.......especially his amazingly authentic fish 'n chips. Jeffrey's wit made him one of a kind & always made our meal enjoyable. Wishing him good luck on future endeavors.

His roast beef and cole slaw were my two favorite items among a lot of others that were very good. Was a regular customer and not easily offended by signs I paid no attention to, so he does leave a void.
I never used his library, friends did, but loved to talk football with him. He played, followed, and was very knowledgeable about football, (the Premier League), and never wavered in his love and support of Manchester United.

This is the longest restaurant obituary on record, I suspect. R.I.P. Magana.

Some restaurants don't even get a line of print when they go.

I had one lunch there several years ago when we had other business nearby. The food was too rich for my taste, so I didn't return. Same with Mom's and a few others serving that style of food. Nothing personal.
The place had the distinction of having very polarized opinions about him, the signs, etc. As far as I'm concerned, it was Jeffrey's eatery, so he was entitled to make the rules as he saw fit. We'll probably never know whether his policies affected his end result.
Fortunately for restaurants, people have different preferences. I think the lengthy comments on the demise reflect the polarized opinions: Jeffrey's fans were and are extremely loyal. For me and restaurants, it's not about the owner, it's about the food.
I wish Jeffrey well in his future enterprises.

Re: Cafe Magana
I went there when I needed comfort food -- or just plain comfort. I mostly went with a friend or two, but sometimes went alone. I'd place my order and browse through books while I waited. Jeffrey usually chatted and joked while I ate and he worked. I would leave with a few books, feeling full and content. If I was with friends Jeffrey often joined our party even as he continued working.
When Jeffrey's brother was fighting cancer and around the time he died, our visits were more somber but we shared Jeffrey's sorrow as he had shared our joy. I have good memories of Cafe Magana and will miss it.

Re: Cafe Magana
I dropped by the new raw pet food shop today and tried a kilo of the cat food. Two out of three gato's found it palatable when mixed in with their regular food. The third ate a bit. I do hope his pet food business is successful. It is a healthier alternative than commercial food.
