MaGaNa Has A New Menu

I was at MaGaNa Wednesday and Jeffery has a new menu.  He has lunch specials from 12:00 – 2:30 PM.  He has soup & salad $91; soup, salad + meat $111; soup & sandwich $91; soup, sandwich, 1 side order $111.  He also has his regular menu and most items include one side order.  Extra side orders are $25.  If you don’t want a side which is included with your order you subtract $25 from the price.

MaGaNa’s new menu is trimmed down and extremely reasonably priced.  I had his cheeseburger with his fabulous onion rings included for my side and tea for $125.  The first page of the new menu lists the salads, soups and sandwiches available for the specials.  The second page lists the special pricing and the rest of the menu gives a description of the items available.

Jeffery plans to add more sandwiches, soups and salads as his customers indicate interest.

MaGaNa is like most restaurants in the area whose business is slowing down.  Jeffery started a lending library for his customers and built bookshelves for them.  Jeffery has had the same employees for years and pays them top wages per hour and they get all the tips.  It would be a shame to lose this wonderful place due to lack of business.

I think it would help the business if he loosened up on the "rules" and the signs and let folks sit where they want to, share meals if they want to, etc.
He serves some very good food. Nice to see an expanded menu.

I don't know if Jeffrey could "loosen up" even if he wanted to. I just go with the flow and enjoy the food -- and his charm which is all his own.

The last time I was there (a few weeks ago), he had changed his policy of including IVA in the menu price and adding it on when you received the check, which resulted in a 16% shock increase in prices. I thought it would have been better to change the menu price to include the IVA like almost all the other restaurants do.
He also start charging extra for the chips on his "fish and chips", which anyplace in the world I've eaten them, they go together for the price of the selection.
I thought both moves were bad marketing.
He still has one of the best quality food selection for a non high end eatery.

The new menu includes the IVA in the price like the other restaurants do.

As previously stated all items that would need a side has one side included in the price.  If you order the fish you get one side which could be "chips" or something else.

I went to Cafe MaGaNa for lunch one day, and I wasn't impressed by the quality of the food for the prices he charged. There are so many other restaurants that IMO have better food at a more reasonable price.

But they don't have the same congenial host who is so willing to serve and please..........jaja.

i don't care about the rest of his fare as long as he keeps making proper fish and chips from durado which no other restaurant can compare to.

It must have been an off day for his congeniality on the day we went, because he walked right past our table a few times, and never even acknowledged us! And the girl who did serve us got busy on her laptop after she brought our order. I had to walk over to her to ask for more drinks!

I ate a Magana's... once.

It all the signs that get me....I actually wonder why he is in Mexico.

He does it "his way".

If taken literally, it would explain why I didn't much like the fish and chips I got. He served me the shyte from Costco. Aha! Got it.

Jeffery is a man of the world who has lived in many different places in his past life. He arrived in MX some time ago, don't remember how long but probably around 20 years ago. He opened a place on the beach in Bucerrias and met his Mexican wife. Nine or ten years ago he opened a tiny restaurant with his ribs and sauces in the strip mall where Dominos is now. A few years later he moved to Riberas and expanded the menu. He was a professional soccer player and is the hardest working restauranter I've ever known. He is also hysterically funny. . .in an offensive sarcastic cynical way.

Between the weather thread and this one, InsideLakesaide is starting to sound a lot like Chapala.com. Ugh.

I like Jeffrey/Geoffrey (however he spells it). We've always gotten along because I 'get' his sense of humor. One time we were going at each other and I was ordering that (great) house salad they make and I told him I didn't want the raisins in it because I hate raisins. He replied, "Maybe I'll put them in just to spite you." So I replied, "Then maybe I'll flush them down your delicate little toilet." He howled with laughter.

I find him entertaining, and the food is very consistent which is unusual around here. And yes, he works incredibly hard trying to satisfy a very difficult clientele. I understand that others find him abrasive (and I'm sure he does, too). Easy solution: eat there if you like the food and him, don't if you don't.

Hey I never said his food was bad it was just all the signs everywhere made me feel a little bit funny.  Yes he does have a good but strange sense of humor. It was always a contest between Bubba and him for who had the most signs. I just think it is a strange way to treat us... Kinda like a old style cafeteria at work.

If you like hot chili he has it.  I probably would go more often but its a long walk from Ajijic so I don't tend to go.
