Re: Security Software
The best security software that exists:
Linux
although it is a complete OS (you can install alongside windows or Mac OSX), you will not get a virus. There are many distros and for a noob I recommend Linux Mint . Linux Mint 17 I believe is the Stable Long Term support release. Otherwise there is Ubuntu . Ubuntu 14.04 is the current stable long term support. If you have 2 GB or more of RAM install 64 bit version
Then kiss all the scanning , malware and crap goodbye

Don't put too much effort into this. Many have tried to sell the benefits of open source, all have failed. It's all too hard to learn, doncha know. Besides, it's free, so it can't possibly be any good.

Re: Security Software
Just download ubuntu disk and try it without installing not hard at all.
If you have not tried a current release your reply is irrelevant

My reply was sarcasm. I think most people picked-up on that. I'm currently running xubuntu 15.10.

I use Kaspersky. It is ranked among the best for:
catching the bad stuff
low on false positives - catching the wrong stuff
low use of system resources
and it isn't annoying.

Re: Security Software
Jim:
I tried panda a couple of years ago and was not impressed, I found it a little too controlling. I now use the free version of Avast and like it. Use it on my phone also.
I used to use AVG until it began to use too much memory. Otherwise I found it very good.

Ditto to DaveP's comments.. Same for me .. Running free version of Avast after jumping away from AVG for same reasons. Avast doing the job for me just fine on both laptop and phone.
Good luck Jim !
