pewter repair?
this is a "pony" size glass bottom, circa 1887 American tankard which is now leaking. does anyone know who can repair this without butchering it and making it worthless?

Where is it leaking? Is it at the bottom seal or at the handle?.

Re: pewter repair?
Hi Pedro,
You might try cleaning the bottom well and using some clear nail polish to re-seal the outer rim. Avery small amount painted at the line where the glass meets the pewter should do the trick, without distracting from the mug.

Re: pewter repair?
gracias,i might try that. but there is a space under the pewter which i have cleaned out of a whitish powdery substance. any idea what they may have sealed it with originally, halfglass? i tried asking this on a knowledgeable antique site that i belong to on facebook but have yet to get a reply to my query there. i was thinking of epoxy which is similar to nail polish but i would like to use something 19th century authentic if possible.

Re: pewter repair?
Pedro,
It was probably sealed with Water Glass a sodium silicate sealer. Used for sealing all kinds of stuff, from car radiators to concrete.
Was a sealer way back when late 1600s to present.
