After you read that, you might want to read this and cleanse your palate.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
Off topic and too lazy to google, but can anyone tell me if someone who has had shingles as a child should get the shingles vaccination as an adult?

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
As children we had Chickenpox and later in life we might have shingles or herpes Zoster. Shingles can be terrible or in some cases not bad at all. But don't take chances a shingles shot is very cheap if you are over 65 and up North and covered

What are your odds of getting it again? and how effective is the vaccine? and yes it is my understanding one can get it again. I too was blessed with em at 18 years old.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
I've gotten flu shots for years when NOB without ill effects or any bad episodes of flu. However, it is true that there are a small percentage of adverse reactions with these vaccines and past performance is no guarantor of future results.
To the best of my recollection, pretty much all of us older folks did the chicken pox thing when we were kids. I plan on getting the shingles vaccine on my next trip north.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
the shingles vaccine at lcs is $2300p and is $200cdn in canada so i would imagine it's more in the excited states. i believe they are offering it in brisenos new offices.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
Pedro the shots are expensive if you have to pay. But in my case, look at my age and my picture and you can see I am way over 65. So when up north, with Medicare and secondary insurance I paid less than $50
Correct me if I am wrong but if you live part time in Canada each year can be covered too and you would pay much less as well.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
Canadian medical plans do not usually cover any "elective" vaccinations such as flu shots. I imagine shingles is in the same category. Although I am not sure if that includes seniors.
Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
Although I would love to be your age, Bob, we seniors get a lot paid for. Last fall in Seattle, I got a free flu and a free pneumonia shot and as I posted above, several years ago, they paid for the majority of my Shingles shot. I don't exactly remember how much I paid for my share of the Shingles shot but is was $50 or less.
And although you are not forced to get a flu shot, it's not considered elective up here. They want everyone to get one. (Not that it is helping that much this year, I read)

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
You are right about the flu shot this year, Pete. Some years they guess better when anticipating the strain that will take off. It is no secret that this year's batch is just 24% effective. I suppose for people in high-risk categories that reduction in risk is worth it.

heard this from a couple who visited from canada this week and went to lcs and noted and commented on the cost in alberta. both are seniors.Pedro wrote:the shingles vaccine at lcs is $2300p and is $200cdn in canada so i would imagine it's more in the excited states. i believe they are offering it in brisenos new offices.

Thank you, Pete. Best to take advantage of all services for seniors while you still have them up there.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
Flu kills people, not the vaccine. Unfortunately many people we are seeing with the flu this year did receive their shots. Hopefully this does not deter people next year from getting vaccinated and trying to outsmart the flu virus for another season. It is really something you want to avoid at all costs...if you've been afflicted you know.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
Pedro: why not use Google.ca and in your "Public Health Agency of CA, go to Public Funding for Influenza Vaccination by Province/Territory (as of September, 2014)
OR Go direct to the link shown below.
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/im/ptimprog-progimpt/fluvacc-eng.php
It will help explain to you the rates in your country. It would appear that Canada has a great plan
Then do the same for Shingles. It aint bad
OR Go direct to the link shown below.

Re: Flu Vaccine Deaths
what for-i don't go to canada for medical treatment and not only that-i don't doubt the veracity of my friends who actually live in alberta and found out that it was roughly the same for "shingles"[medical name -"herpes zoster"] at lcs as it would cost them in alberta.MexicoPete wrote:Pedro: why not use Google.ca and in your "Public Health Agency of CA, go to Public Funding for Influenza Vaccination by Province/Territory (as of September, 2014)

Well, three people in my bible study class got shingles and all three got the vaccine. We will not get this vaccine. To quote a doctor "it's all about the terrain" when it comes to illnesses. Your body and general health are the terrain. Doctor's opinion was also that it's a risk not worth taking as there aren't enough people getting to justify the risk of a vaccine. The drug companies love selling these things. Do your own due diligence....
