Repeater/Extender
I already have one WiFi repeater/extender in service to cover my first floor in my house.
Can I employ a second repeater to re-broadcast the first repeaters signal to the upstairs????
TIA

Yep but each repeater will slow down things a little but it should work. My repeater knocks my 10 down to 8.

10 down to 8!!!!!!!!!! Brings tears to my eyes. I'm about 4 KM from the Ajijic switching center. On a good day I get 1,6 mbps. That is when its not failing every half hour or so.
Carlos Slim is a criminal for what he has done to Mexico's telecom infrastructure.
Thanks to Helperguy I ended up ordering a couple of the Lynksys PLWK400 WiFi powerline systems at $51 USD each.
I'll post when I receive and install them.

Re: Repeater/Extender
Call Telmex in Mexico city and complain. They'll likely fix it. They did mine.

Re: Repeater/Extender
The distance to the switching center is the issue and Telmex refuses to install a repeater on their line.

Cable modem has 10 for watching baseball in HD. DSL Telmex modem can only run to 2 at most and I keep it as a backup. Running it at one means it always works in the rain. Problem can't be fixed as wire is too long to DSL switch. Telecable works in more areas at higher speeds than Telmex. Repeaters do kill some speed and I see no difference between repeaters as far as performance. Some are easier to set up than others. I use Amped wireless units available at Fry's because they are easy to set up and have a external antenna connection which allows you to use Asus 9db gain external antenna or Corner antenna which concentrate the signal into a 90 degree spread. Do your research as I can get signal on the other side of 2ft rock adobe walls with right setup. External antenna connectors also allow you use extention cords for external antenna. PM me if you want to see what you can do with wifi in these stone houses. A friend of mine 3/4 of a mile away can still see my signal.

Re: Repeater/Extender
OK! I said I would report back.
I installed a Powerline Wi-Fi Network Extender in my home based on a recommendation from Helperguy.
Its a gem. It extends Wi-Fi signals throughout your home from your cable or telephone modem using the existing electrical house wiring to carry the signal.
Plug one powerline appliance into a nearby receptacle and cable it to your existing modem. Plug a receiving powerline appliance anywhere in the house where you want Wi-Fi reception and it will send/receive signals there.
I now have reception in our guest bedroom which is 80 feet, two concrete walls and a floor away from the Infinitum modem.
It will apparently work from any receptacle connected to the same breaker box as the modem so you could even handle a remote Casita or workshop if its wired that way.
Total cost was $53 USD.
Thanks again Helperguy!!!!!

Re: Repeater/Extender
Apparently they work as long as all the circuits are in the same breaker box. In my case the modem is in the den on one circuit and the guess room is on a different circuit so you could handle an out building as long as it shared a breaker box.

Re: Repeater/Extender
Thanks for the clarification. I had understood it needed to be on the same breaker.
Re: Repeater/Extender
I know for sure it won't work past the transformer.

Confused about WiFi vs PowerLine ...
Perhaps I'm confused. I thought PowerLine devices were just a type of device that allowed you to use your home's power wiring instead of running chunky Ethernet cables all over the place. You plug in one PL device to power and to your main router or modem (Wifi-capable or not) with a short Ethernet cable. Then you plug in another PL device into a power plug anywhere else in the same home (i.e.: inside the home's external power transformer) and then plug a device needing an internet connection (computer, Vonage phone box, etc.) into it. Nothing to do with WiFi or wireless connections.
How would this type of device act to extend a weak WiFi network so you can wirelessly connect devices (laptops, iPads, etc) where the signal is now too weak?

Re: Repeater/Extender
I might be wrong Bob, but I thought it wouldn't matter if it were on the same breaker or not if it/they were switched on, but it had to be on the same phase. The typical house here is on two to three phases.

Re: Repeater/Extender
Its exactly as you described it. However the appliance you plug into the location where you want the boosted signal also delivers a Wi-Fi signal.

Re: Repeater/Extender
Two types of repeaters.
Repeaters that send signal on AC wiring and rebroadcast a wifi signal from second black box plugged into wall.
Repeaters that pick up Wifi signal from first box and rebroadcast it at full strength from second black box plugged into wall. First box sends signal to second box and you can keep daisy chaining if you want. Problem is each repeater slows things down a little.
Note slowdowns can occur from Too low wifi signal causing resends or using a repeater which increases signal strength but does take a little bit of performance in the process of repeating. I use the second type of repeater and the original 10 down signal falls to 8 when going through the repeater. I do not know results of the first type of repeater as never used one.
