Great info on this forum. My husband and myself will be moving to lake Chapala from Aurora Colorado and crossing at Laredo. I want to take our black Chevy Avalanche so I can bring my 2 cats and personal items. He is concerned that driving a big black SUV through Mexico might be dangerous. Getting robbed and having the SUV stolen.

Thanks
Dee

While this type of vehicle does seem to be the vehicle of choice for the bad guys I haven't heard of anyone getting hijacked for a very long time. If you only travel during the day and get far from the border after you cross it, before you stop, I don't suspect you will have a problem. Others on here can tell you the best route and the best place to stay overnight.

Be aware if you are planning on living here fulltime and acquiring a permanente residency visa you are not allowed to drive a foreign plated vehicle.

What Bob said.....
I travel Mexican highways all the time and just use normal precaution (with a black Town & Country).
For new or first time travelers, I suggest using toll roads and daylight hours, fueling up and eating (look for the black federal hiway patrol cars at the roadside restaurants) in congested areas for peace of mind until you feel more comfortable.
Peace of mind is as important as prevention, and in most cases is the same.

I'll add my little bit - we moved here from CO about 4 years ago and owned an Avalanche (not even black) that we had jacked up and big tires to go into the mountain snow. After our first trip here I knew it would be a big pain to bring the Av here. We sold it long before we moved and purchased a new Xtrail here that we drove back and forth a couple of times to CO to bring stuff down. Best thing we ever did especially immigration wise.
