If you’re going via SLP it would most likely be Matehuala

I like the City Express motel at the north side of Monterrey, right on the side of the highway to Nuevo Laredo.  Google maps shows it's 11 1/2 hrs from Ajijic.

There is a Carl's Jr. right beside the hotel for a late dinner. Free American breakfast the next morning.....

The advantage is that it is a relatively short drive to the boarder the next morning as you are through Monterrey.

However the disadvantage is .... the 11.5 hour drive. And in the winter this means some " night time" driving. Matehuala suits most folks needs.

We make this trip a couple of times a year. With one exception we always stay in Saltillo. We did the City Express in Monterrey once but that just makes the day too long particularly at this time of year. Saltillo is about 8 1/2 hours from here. The last couple of trips we have stayed in the new Hyatt Place.

Saltillo is my choice also... I stay in the Sheraton 5 Points. BUT, I also go up through Aquascaliente/Zacatecas instead of SLP especially now since there is a true bypass of Aguas.

On the way North I stop in Saltillo so I have a short second day. On the way South I stop in Matehuala so I have a short second day. When you turn off the North periferico around Monterrey to hit the road to Laredo, note that the first one or two gas stations on your right may not have many cars at the pump. If you need gas, drive up some and choose the 7/11 or another station. The attendants at the first two have had a history of "chipping" the pump so you get ripped off. There are few cars in line waiting for gas because the locals know this. Que le vaya bien.

We also do the Ags/Zacatecas route in preference to the SLP route. The new bypass around Ags is a great improvement!

The Hotel San Pedro Express (nuevo león - google it) is 108 km past Matehula going north. Then only 5 hours to Laredo, can be there by noon if you want. It's the cost as Las Palmas, but so much nicer - a king or 2 queens, top quality bedding, great A/C, 24 hr security gated parking, truly, out in the middle of nowhere. Free Mex breakfast @ 24 hour truck stop type restaurant next door. Gas too. It's built in the middle divider of the highway, easy in/out. No pets/no smoking tho, so then it's Las Palmas.
