Sick Parakeets
My parakeets are getting sick one at a time. They ruffle their feathers, get weak and stagger on the bottom of the cage and have diarrhea. I am trying ivermectin drops in their water. They seem a little better but are not recovering. I have them in a separate cage and are keeping them warm. Please someone help me with advice.

Re: Sick Parakeets
Sounds like a good plan. It has been a long humid summer, all the trees are suffering. May be a mold or virus.
If the parakeets are Norwegian Blues - they could be pining for the fjords!

As a follow up for you kind folks who responded. I took my 2 birds to the Ladron Clinic this morning. They have a bacterial infection that is being treated with drops in their water. He also said to make sure I give them a small piece of orange or pineapple regularly. I give them greens and fruits plus their seeds but have not been giving them citrus. Now I will.

I bought 2 Parrots and have tried feeding them fruits and veggies... they won't eat it... they seem to like seeds only.
side note... I was told Chocolate & Avocados are poisonous to birds.

Keep putting the fruit and veggies in....eventually they will eat them. And yes, chocolate and avocados are poisonous to birds.

Re: Sick Parakeets
I make a birdie mash for my cockatiels in a food processor. In it goes chick peas, broccoli, carrots, whole wheat bread, sprouts and parsley or cilantro. I add a can of whole corn and store in vacuum canisters.
I feed only the "birdie mash" in the morning and switch it out for pellets and seed in the afternoon. All seven cockatiels learned to enjoy it and my new parrot surprised me by eating it also, but he gets fruit too. To teach the little birds to eat pellets, I feed the mash in the morning, the pellets until 3pm and then add seeds until bedtime. By removing the food at night you insure that they will be hungry in the morning and willing to try the mash.

I forgot to add that several times a week I chop up a hard boiled egg and put it on top of the birdie mash for both the cockatiels and for ChuChu the wondrous parrot. The new pup gets some too. They all love it. Thanks for letting us know there's a bird vet here Lakeside. I had heard there was one in Guadalajara. I hope your birds are recovering.
