Can a (personal)check drawn on a US bank still be cashed or deposited in the local banks?

At CIBanco -- Yesterday was the last day to cash US checks "for a few weeks". I think this just applies to US citizens cashing US checks-other nationalities cashing US checks is not a problem.

Basically no, unless you have an investment account into which the check can be deposited.  Best to check with your own bank.

Bancomer accepts US checks deosited into a checking account. Does not have to be an investment account.

How difficult would it be for a US citizen to open a Canadian checking account?

David, I spoke with the manager at Ajijic Bancomer Thursday at length and he assured me that as long as I just deposited a personal US check into my checking account and did not cash it there was no issue. Just keep doing it the way I have been. I have no reason not to trust him at this point.

I believe you need a residence in Canada and probably some sort of residency visa if you are not a citizen.

That's good news. I use Banco Multiva, they have the same policy.
