Hate to admit it, but I felt the same way on the first. Is the world making me a cranky old crotch, or do I have to carry that weight as well?

George Washington would have signed anything once the British, and Canadians in training, took Washington, D.C. - they had his wife hostage! As true gentlemen, they graciously released her, making sure of her safe return. They only killed one American - they had warned they had zero tolerance for guerilla tactics and snipers, one man took a pot shot from an upstairs window, and he was killed instantly. The only regret is that they burned the Library of Congress, for which Tony Blair profusely apoligized for some years ago.

When you say that the British burned Washington, I assume you are not talking about either George or Martha.
Just want to be clear.

Re: Happy July 4th
You are right about George and Martha. I did some more reading. The British commander's last name was "Cockburn". One of his goals was to destroy the Washington newspaper who was always putting him down - calling him "The Ruffian". He was ready to start burning but the locals begged him not to, because the fire would most likely destroy local homes with it. So what he did was to destroy every metal type faces in the place that contained "C" or "c".

No. But some of us Americans happen to know the history of our country. Obviously much better than you.
