I somehow ended up with approximately 200usd worth of Nepali rupees after my last trip. Not an easy international currency to do anything with. So, does any one know where I might exchange said rupees, in Guad or ??? or are you going to Nepal in the not to distant future?

At a bank in exchange for pesos would be easiest.

Try the airport casa de cambio. They handle a lot of different currencies.

I think Pedro is right....it's so bloody hard to exchange currencies that are worth little on the world market. But, I will call the casa de cambia at the airport and the few we have here. Why I forgot to exchange these back I'll never know. Thanks everyone.

Call the Nepal Embassy in Mexico City....they might be able to advise you.

I will be in London in a few weeks....maybe the Pakistani money changers there might take them. Knowing them, if they did, it would be a terrible exchange rate.

I usually just keep the currency until I find somebody going and sell it to them.

J.P. Donleavy in his book The Unexpurgated Code: A Complete Manual of Survival and Manners, recommends to keep on hand a number of foreign currencies for tipping. He was particularly fond of Swedish Kronens. The idea is to tip with confidence, and the one receiving the tip never quite knows if they are being tipped generously. He also wrote on how to stop people detesting you: Don't try!

I never cease to be amazed at the number of total ASHOLES out there who even admit it in writing!
If he ever goes back to the same restaurant, I hope the waiter "augments" his dish before he serves it to him.

J. P. will only give rights for filming "The Ginger Man" if Johhny Depp stars in the movie. Johnny won't do it for the money being offered.

In Mexico where wait staff often works for tips only, tipping with a worthless currency could be called "theft of service" and might even be termed as passing counterfeit currency since one would know damned well that it would be worthless to the server? There have been some recent stories in the media where people have been caught passing counterfeit Pesos and gone off to prison for multiple years. It wasn't that they were the originators of the currency but the fact that they had discovered receiving the fakes and wanted to recoup their loss. One recent story had a guy going off to prison for passing a $200MXN note. I believe he got 5 years?

In Ireland where Donleavy lives, tips are not expected in pubs, as the minimum wage is around 15 US$ per hour.
Only the Yank tourists tip.
I also suspect he is coming up with his usual Irish bs, as I doubt he gets his hands on much Swedish currency, as he is close to 90 years old, and doesn't travel very far from home.

Slainte:

I was responding to the forum member's suggestion and certainly not what happens in Ireland.

Going back to the OP, we don't purchase currency from the country we are visiting prior to arrival and we try to leave a country with as little of their currency as possible. With Mexico, for example, we usually can leave with less than $10USD in Pesos.

If you can't recognize the book as a piece of humor, a satire of the class systems in Great Britain, and a satire of 'self help' books, then there is really something wrong. It's a very funny book written in 1975. His writings often make fun of people who take themselves, and their lame advice, far too seriously. He would have a ball lakeside - and Albuquerque.

It's hard to get past the Queen of England, Rob Ford of Toronto, and Donleavy of Ireland flushing their toilets with drinking water.

It's also hard to believe that Irish pub waiters get the same min' wage (9 euros = $12 us)) as Canadian pensioners. tobesure, tobesure.

I didn't know his "A Fairy Tale of New York" was the basis for Pogues "Fairy Tale of New York". One of the most famous Irish American songs I would say (this is an opinion, and does not need a laughtrack).

It's not Irish-American, as it was written by Shane McGowan...and yes, it has become the most popular Christmas song.
McGowan and Donleavy, do share some characteristics.  lol!

Pubs in Donegal (35 years ago) were not like the Irish pubs in
London, or like the ones on TV.

Been back 9 times but the last time was in 1979.
