A double semi-trailer freight truck, three smaller trucks and a compact car, of which two and the freighter were set on fire, were used to block all four lanes including the shoulder and the central ridge. At least 20 .223-caliber bullet casings of those belonging to AR-15 assault rifles were recovered at the site.

Almost simultaneously two officers of the Secretary of Transportation were attacked while on patrol meters before coming to Columbus Avenue in the town of Tlaquepaque.
