Confusion in San Miguel de Allende?

Seems to be some typical contradictions between the YouTube video and the article which follows:

I guess people feel safe until they get affected, obbiously these people were not affected.

The video is clearly an attempt to whitewash the reality on the ground in order to keep the tourists and their dollars coming. That pretty much sums up the sole focus of Mayor Trejo's administation. Lots of cosmetic improvements to the town but little or nothing done to address the structural issues, from terrible air pollution (which is actually increasing due to all of the additional traffic), the widening gulf between rich and poor (which again is exacerbated by the successful efforts to turn the city into a playground for rich tourists), rampant crime (including taxi drivers robbing patrons, sharply increased burglaries and home invasions and several murders of expats).

The folks interviewed in the video are naive, disingenuous or both. If you don't follow the Spanish media and only talk to your fellow well-heeled gringos you can get away with thinking you are safe - until you aren't.

We have friends who've lived in San Miguel for 16 years and others who moved there from Lakeside after the massacres a couple of years ago. All have moved away or are planning to do so, due to sharply increased crime, pollution and the ongoing gentrification making even someething as simple as access to fondas and taco stands impossible in the center of what has become a toy town. It's still a beautiful place to visit, but.....
