How about asking your doctor for some sleeping pills, they do work.

Sounds like the OP is looking for "natural" remedies, doesn't it? The problem with pills is that you feel like a zombie the next day. I've used them when traveling on occasion. Don't like that feeling. Shocked

many years ago i spent a weekend learning transcendental[sic?] meditation. they told us never to do our mantra lying down. hmmm, i thought a few years later one night when i could not sleep. i did it and didn't even know when i went. been using it ever since but don't need to that often. pm me and i will give you my mantra that i actually paid money for.

Try magnesium supplements, take one several times a day to ensure absorbtion. Works like a charm and is natural.

I too had sleep problems until I discovered Siete Azahares(an orange blossom tea.) I drink a cup of this tea an hour or so before bedtime. It works well almost every night. And I like the taste.

valerian tea works well. In mexico it's called: valeriana

Be careful though, and as it does interact with other meds:

I used to travel to the Middle East regularly on business. It was brutal because the clock was almost completely reversed. They say it takes an hour a day to adjust so we didn't feel normal for almost two weeks and then it was usually time to go home!

I asked our nurse practitioner for sleeping pills. Instead, she suggested I try melatonin, which is the sleep hormone that your body produces. I bought some at a health food store.

It was fantastic! My colleagues started taking it as well-- and this included one guy who said he never took pills. But he was as desperate as everyone else was.

I found two different versions. One you take like a regular pill and another you put under your tongue about 30 minutes to an hour after you want to go to sleep. Both worked really well.

I don't know if it would be available down there or not.

I let tv bore me to sleep, when all else fails all I have to do is put on a boring movie.  Works 98% of the time for me.

I have found that Doctors here, especially the younger ones, are very reluctant to prescribe sleeping pills. They are not available without prescription, and they only fill small numbers at a time.

Someone I have compete confidence in suggested a herbal syrup, made in Guadalajara. It is called Pal Sin solucion. The box says its for stress, but apparently it is very good for sleep. It contains Valerian, Passion flower and one I don't recognize called Humulus Lupulo. It is available in a well stocked naturo/homeopathic store called Monte Bello in Chapala on Madero near the car wash. Their phone 376 765 7181. They sell it for 45 pesos, everywhere else is 92 pesos. Sweet dreams!

"Humulus Lupulo"
Hops, like in beer.

I have tried Vivinox-N, a pill compounded in Germany and available here in Mexico. Among other places, Costco in Morelia sells it. It's relaxing, but it won't keep me asleep.

I also tried various strengths of Cronocaps, which are delayed releae melatonin. It puts me to sleep but I still wake up periodically, somewhat dazed.

How about trying "sex", for those of you who remember that pastime. It's good for relaxing and promotes a sense of well being through the release of endorphins and other hormones.  Shocked

Melatonin works. Magnesium works great. If U can get the powder Magsmart, etc., one scoop in liquid at bedtime does the trick, and it is a crucial mineral, especially heartwise. Most of us are magnesium deficient.

Camomile tea - in the US I used to drink an herbal tea called Sleepy Time. I contained mainly camomile. Worth a try and won't hurt you.

For us when traveling around Mexico, the two biggest sleep deterrents are beds that we swear are made of "marmol" and a poor choice of locations where the noise can really get to you.

From today's INFORMADOR:

"Mexican snore more than sleep":

http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dinformador%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DYtB%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26channel%3Dsb&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=es&u=http://www.informador.com.mx/suplementos/2014/517933/6/mexicanos-roncan-mas-de-lo-que-duermen.htm&usg=ALkJrhh02PGeBNfgSb12Edq0vUb8b2W3Fg

I am sure some of the humor I saw in the headline came from the translation!

My first thought was that if they had decent beds to sleep on, they might not snore so much? We really enjoy Mexico and traveling around the country but the beds are really getting to us to the point that we are taking a hard look at options.

thanks all for the suggestions, some where beneficial, some weren't. one I definitely didn't do...a couple I didn't try, don't like milk for example. I am sleeping better now , but the best remedy was to buy a new pillow !!
