Pepe needs our help!!

I will try to get an update on Monday.  

Pepe went to the hospital today for some prep work.
It could be as much as 2 weeks before the operation.
As I was unable to speak to him, I do not know the financial situation.
I will post updates as they become available.   

Pepe was open for business today (Sunday). He is usually closed.
I talked with him and he said that his surgery is now set for March 18.
The doctor says he needs more money and less weight.
I don't think we can help him loose the 8 kilos, but we can help on the money front.

I spoke with Pepe today, and he needs 10 to 12k more.
He is selling his truck to get some of the funds.

I have been watching this thread since its inception and I understand that Pepe appears to have a good deal of personal pride BUT the mathematics don't work and with these additional amounts being required, the hole Pete is digging is getting deeper. Let's say you purchase a $1000MXN gift card that is redeemable for drinks or food, he still has a cost built either in the form of product cost or possibly in labor? Depending on what Pepe has for a net/net profit margin, it will take a heck of a bunch of time to recoup the original estimate of $32K MXN and this additional $10 to $12K MXN.

I would submit that people forgetting their gift card values will do a great deal more towards allowing Pepe & Aurora putting this challenge behind them?

First of all, this is NOT an additional 10-12k, It is all part of the original estimate.
Pepe is doing what he can. and we are doing what we can to help a friend.
Your criticism is neither constructive nor wanted.
If you do not wish to help, then you do not have to do so.
I would appreciate it if you would keep your inane comments to yourself.

I did not read Cheena´s post as a criticism. I thought he was suggesting that people might purchase gift cards and then "forget" to redeem them as a way to help Pepe the most. Maybe I misunderstood?

Exactly, you are 100% correct including your Math.  We too figured this out when we first heard about it,  knowing Pepe would not want to ask for freebies
yet, it did not add up.  The difference between $30,000 MX  for surgery versus buying   a n d   using $1,000 pesos towards  food & drinks was a great idea although, the Math does Not add up.  
Your "estimate" of an additional $10 to 12,000  MX Pesos more may even be on the  low side but is a good start on your part, IF customers redeem
their "gift" cards.

CheenaGringo was making a valid comment. Purchasing the gift cards and not redeeming them would be a much greater help to Pepe. I think that your reply was rude and uncalled for!

I have to admit that the comments made have really been bothering me for a couple of days and have been reading over my post to see what I might have said wrong. The only thing I can come up with is that there was probably a misunderstanding of the following statement:

It might have been clearer if I had changed one word to:
"I would submit that people forgiving their gift card values will do a great deal more towards allowing Pepe & Aurora putting this challenge behind them?

And I do admit to misunderstanding the need for $10K to $12MXN more since I took it to be in addition to the original estimated amount.

CheenaGringo, I think that most people on here understood what you meant, and you have no reason to apologize or try to explain. Your idea obviously comes from having a very generous heart, and thinking of others in their time of need. Kudos to you!

Cheena, changing "forgetting" to "forgiving" really would not have mattered. Your meaning was clear either way. I remain confused and offended by the rude responses.

I was one who went and signed up for the card with no intention of using the value but knowing that it was a good way to give something without embarrassing the recipient. My concern is that I have given all that I can but the need is still there and not met. I do what I can in this village, but it is not enough, alas.

JayBear, the need is overwhelming--not just here but around the world. We do what and how much we can.

Thanks. I had to set boundaries when I moved to Mexico. I have limited funds and I cannot solve the problems of everyone I meet here, much less the ones that I do not meet. One does what one can and draws the line. That does not prevent tears. I wish I had more to give.
