Yeah, like instead of a Bobby Sands mural saying "you are now entering Free Derry" it would be a portrait of Mireles saying "you are now entering Free Ajijic". (i.e., except for the French restaurants)

Re: Templarios
At the request of the defense, Mr. Mireles' court hearing has been postponed until Saturday. At the hearing, the defense will argue that Mireles was unarmed at the time he was arrested and therefore not in possession of illegal firearms; the prosecution will counter that Mireles is responsible for the illegal weapons found in the armored van registered in his name. At this stage of "the process," the judge may order Mireles held for an additional 40 days while the investigation continues...or the judge can turn him loose due to lack of evidence.
There have been scattered protests on Mr. Mireles behalf and his supporters have vowed to maintain their roadblock on highway 200 until he is released.

Re: Templarios
What is the meaning of the parenthesis around "the process"?
I must say that planting evidence on innocent people has been a tactic used by Mexican law enforcement forever. How many hippies were falsely accused after the police "found" pot in their belongings back in the old days? We're talking about experts here.

Do you think they planted the 80 kilos of pot on him when he was arrested back in 1988?

I have absolutely no idea about his arrest in 1988. But I doubt that there was even one percent of the politics involved in that arrest for pot than in the recent arrest for weapons.

Re: Templarios
check out borderland beat for breaking news on what's happening with "DOCTOR" not any "mister" mireles. human rights and diabetic specialists have even been denied access to him. since as a diabetic, he needs insulin and special diet,i would suggest that soon we will not here anymore about "DOCTOR" MIRELES.
by the way there have been more than "scattered" protests including in the usa and not just mexico.

I'm sure you're right, his first arrest was probably just a common drug trafficking arrest, just a criminal caught in the act,no politics involved.Kottke wrote:

This one most likely is political, maybe the open letter that he published to the president with the over the top disrespectful tone and the (tuteando) was a mistake, when I read it I thought he was asking for trouble.
Then again his entourage might have actually been carrying weapons they weren't authorized to carry.

Re: Templarios
Planting evidence is a tactic that is not only used by the police in Mexico, but also by civilians vs. civilians. I personally know of several occasions where "evidence" was planted by one individual in another's vehicle/property, and then a dime dropped. Usually as an act of revenge or greed.

Just read that Castillo claims there has been 3,800 arrests/detentions, still in custody, in the four months of the federal campaign in Michoacán. He also said they were going to build a new penal complex to house only kidnappers.

Let's take a look at the sideshow presented this week by Mr. Mireles' legal defense and political supporters. His attorney, Talia Vazquez, had her head shaved to express solidarity with the now skin-headed Mireles...and urged others to do the same. From El Universal...

Meanwhile, in an amazing show of chutzpah, a group of 30 Mireles supporters went to the high-security prison where Mr. Mireles is currently housed and demanded to see the prisoner in order to give him a medical examination. Of course, they knew their demands would be refused by the prison authorities. There is a court order currently in effect which requires the prison authorities to treat Mr. Mireles diabetes. The court order does not allow for private intervention. It was just another publicity stunt staged for the benefit of the evening news. From Borderland Beat...

According to the article, human rights observers were denied the right to visit the prisoner, a right that the article says they possess. I wonder if the people from the Sonora Human Rights Commission believed it was nothing but a publicity stunt? You seem very sure with your comments. Do you have sources other than the ones you cite that give you additional insight into these affairs or do you simply come to your conclusions based on the same information that all of us peruse?

Uh, this is a web forum, just a buncha people expressing opinions. Everyone has one and everyone is free to write it. "According to...", "based on...", "he said...", "she said...", "they reported..." blah, blah, woof woof.
This is not an investigation nor sworn testimony in court. No one needs evidence, proof or credentials to express opinions or their interpretation of what they read. The fate of Mr. Dr. Mireles is not being decided by the opinions of gringos on a web board. Relax.

I think it's standard procedure intended to keep lice out of the prison. They do the same thing in the U.S. Mireles is probably getting the same treatment as any other prisoner...including the same measure of humiliation.

I am very relaxed. I am only trying to figure out where the other poster is coming from. He is obviously free to post whatever he chooses. Do you always respond in this way when someone asks another poster a simple question?

Did they also shave the heads of the other vigilantes arrested along with Dr. Mireles? What were there, 70 or 80 others? Just asking in order to understand if the procedure done to Dr. Mireles is standard procedure or in this case, a psychological tactic meant at intimidation?

Ditto
and his lawyer did the same http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/in-english/2014/lawyer-mireles-shaves-91012.html
Talia Vázquez, lawyer of Jose Manuel Mireles, shaved her head in Solidarity with the former Spokesman of self-defense forces of Michoacán, currently in prison in Sonora.
The lawyer shared her photo on Twitter and Demanded the release of her customer. In her message, Vazquez used the hashtags "# LiberenaMireles", "# MerapocomoMireles" and "# TodossomosAutodefensas".
Yesterday Guillermo Valencia, former mayor of Tepalcatepec, shared a video of himself with a shaved head and people urged us to do the same and Their post photos on social networks.
"I Decided to shave my head in Solidarity with his pain. I invite you to do the same and upload your photos and videos to social networks. Our hair will grow back, but Alfredo Castillo Cervantes (Security Commissioner of Michoacan) will never stop being treacherous and liar, "I said.
The expressions of support came after Mireles was shown shaven and with no mustache at Hermosillo's prison.
