Some friends of a friend currently staying lakeside are interested in touring the area. Anyone have any advice on car rental companies? Is it better to rent in GDL, etc? Thanks.

We just used Mark on our trip. I would highly recommend him. As long as you are ok with late model cars that may or may not have a few issues. Also he only rents within an hour distance from Chapala. So if you are planning on going farther, you would need to find someone else.

One hour distance from Chapala? He must have changed his rules lately then as I have taken his cars to Manzanillo, PV, San Miguel, etc.

Even in his ad above it says "well maintained, and travel long distances without breakdowns"......

Thanks, folks. I'll pass this along. (This is a perfect reason for these boards.)

could be because he knows you, I don't known. I was surprised when he said one hour limit but I just went with it. I advised him we were headed to Guadalajara and he proceed to ask which way... I told him Google had us at 58min. Ymmv

Yeah maybe however I just booked a car for my dad and he asked whereabouts he would be travelling to ensure he gives him an appropriate vehicle. It could also be that the particular car you rented from him wasn't up to any long journeys. I will be seeing Mark tomorrow so will ask him about this.

Based on the car I rented, I would say you are almost certainly correct. When I rented, he said he only had two available

Al & Ron Young in Chapala also rent out "old school" VW Beetles. They appear to have 3 or 4 of them for rent. I believe their rate is $1800 pesos per week. Great reliable cars for bombing around town although no AC or power windows, etc.
