Nogales Travel Advisory (Vicam)

We traveled from Nogales to Lakeside over the past two days, and encountered a road block at Vicam, about 60 km. North of Ciudad Obregon on Monday evening just before dark. Apparently the Yaqui indigenous group are protesting against the State government regarding water rights. We got stuck behind a line of trucks as we entered Vicam, and after sitting for about 20 minutes we, and 4 other cars, were directed to back up and drive on the opposite side of the highway around the blockade. When we arrived at a hotel in Obregon the staff told us of the purpose of the blockade and mentioned that we were very lucky as late last week the Yaquis created a similar blockade and allowed no one to pass for over 24 hours. We must have arrived about 15 minutes after the blockade started as there were only about 20 trucks stopped ahead of us. There was no indication on how long these protests might carry on, and the Federal police seemed to be content to let it proceed. Other than that there is a lot of road work, especially north of Hermosillo, and regardless of how fast you attempt to go it is almost impossible to average more than 100 km. an hour.

Were they blocking both directions?

yes they are on and off mostly on look at TOB, they have lots of information.

Thank You Brigitte, 1st time I've been over there in nearly a year. WHAT A FRIGGIN MESS. I feel sorry for the folks making this trip, and get stuck.....according to reports.....at a road block for 24 hours.....I'd run outa cervesa.....LOL. Hopefully it will get cleared up soon, as I gotta make the trip in 3 weeks, to get my car out of country.

A friend of mine had to double back and spend the night in a hotel. THe next morning she started early but it was closed. She was luck she met a local Yaqui who lived in Guadalajara and took her through dirt road to go around the mess but most people stayed there for hours under major heat..

Check what is going on before youmake the trip because it has not been pleasant for the last week or so.
