Telephone Scam - Beware

I just got a call from "Juan" saying a friend of his gave him my number because the friend told him I was interested in antique things.
I HUNG UP IMMEDIATELY. Then the phone rang again and it went to my answer machine where there was no message left.
Be aware of this type of call.

Do you know what lada the call came from? Got a strange one this morning from "333".

I looked at it as it was ringing the second time and I think it was a 765, like in Riberas.

Last year people called pretending to be the landlord, relative, anybody you would pay attention to. They are Gringoes and will meet you in public so that you will trust them. They will say they are friends with your landlord.  Than someone will call pretending tobe your landlord, relative, whatever and say they are in jail and need money. It was all too good sounding as alarms went off in my head.  I could see how trusting people could be duped. It is quite a clever and elaborate scheme done over weeks.

Extortion and other scam phone calls are very common in Mexico,they usually originate from prisons,the last time I got one I asked him which (carcel) he was calling from,that prompted him to laugh and hang up.Just the other day a rock music band from Spain called Delorian was "virtually" kidnapped in Mexico City via cell phone,you can google it and learn something about how these criminals operate.

I looked "Juan's" number up in my phone and it was a local 765 number.

so are you interested in antiques and have you discussed your interest with other persons?

I have no interest in antiques and have never discussed it with anyone, so that was a BIG tip off of a scam. And for sure if some stranger called and I was interested in antiques and he said a "friend" of yours told me so and so, I would have still hung up.
A legit call would have been, your friend "Jane Doe" told me so and so. I would have ended the call and called Jane Doe to confirm the story and then go from there.
