Just noticed, we forgot to say why!
Day of the Dead because it is so beauitful, magical, mystical, religious and pagan all at the same time. It accepts death, lovingly with respect, humor and mocking bravado. It remembers, honors, mourns and celebrates. It feels comfortable, accepting the dead as still a part of life. It says we all are together somewhere, somehow.
All that being said, no one has mentioned a custom or event that I do not love. Thank you for asking and reminding me how much (and why) I love living here.

Great question. But there are so many!

--Absolutely the Day of the Dead, specifically the altares, and for all the reasons Lady Otter articulated so well.

--The Mexican sense of humor. Maybe not a custom, but close enough to call it a tradition. So cutting, merciless, irreverent, take-no-prisoners, etc.

--The "live in the now" approach to life. Again, I know I'm drifting, but still.

--Castillos

--Siesta

So many more.

Well, last year my nephew who lives in the U.S. had just married into a Mexican family and we all celebrated New Year's Eve together in Florida. At the stroke of midnight we all put on our yellow underwear ...some of us wore it on the OUTSiDE of our clothes and some of us wore it on our heads ...and then we commenced to parade around the neighborhood with our suitcases. I love it because it was hilarious and fun and made a swell impression on the new neighbors.
This is a Mexican tradition Imhad heard of but I have never done it here.

I'm with Lady Otter on this one. She captured my thoughts/feelings perfectly. We gringos could learn a lot about death from the Mexican culture.
