http://www.alabamanewsday.com/national/5649-botanists-attempt-to-create-the-largest-lily-in-the-world-by-cross-pollinating-flowers-that-bloom-for-just-two-nights-a-year.html

I wonder when we will see these Lakeside? A very dramatic plant. I plan on ordering seeds from the U.K., they have a lot of conservatory/greenhouses there and they seem to be the most reliable source for seeds for tropical and subtropical climates. Companies like jungleseeds. com and also the oldest seed company around tandmworldwide.com. I understand seeds are usually allowed through customs, but live plants and cutting need certificates.

Amazing, if they casually allowed foreign Flora in.... especially after all the damage Lake Chapala has endured ...

I think that is Reina de la Noche, or Queen of the Night in English. Beautiful!

Seeds are not allowed as a rule but you can get permission from Government to
bring them in.

Prohibited:
- any uncanned foodstuff (e.g. pork) and derivatives.
Import of canned food is permitted, except for pork and derivatives. For full information contact the nearest representation of Mexico.
- earth, plants, parts of them, flowers, fruits, SEEDS or materials of vegetable origin used as containers, packing or in the manufacture of handicrafts.
It is allowed to import Seeds and plants of varieties and species that are beneficial to the nation, having first secured authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Again - that's what they say, but this only seems to be enforced at airport entry points in personal luggage. One of the main gardeners of the Lake Chapala Garden Society writes that she gets mail order seeds all the time from Thompson and Morgan in the U.S.A. with no problems at all. I suspect that if they are from a large, reputable company, the order would not be tampered with and would follow international guidelines. The nuisance and drug use related plants are well known to these companies.

Anyways - I'll order and see what happens.

Seeds are allowed in to Mexico from recognized Nurseries.

I have received three shipments over the past year and a half from Trade Winds Fruit in California.

This is how the alien lirios in the lake got here, somebody decided to introduce it to Mexico and now it is a pest. This is the case of many foreign entities brought in to the States and Canada, ending up destroying the ecosystem as there is no natural enemies. For example this is happening now in the Great Lakes with introduced fish killing off the native species, plants taking over where desired fauna used to be etc.

Well the world was a very different place in the late 1800's. Now, there are rules and watchers - professional watchers. What I enjoy about gardeners is their insatiable curiosity and simple joy of life. Without them Mexico would be a much duller place, no bouganvilla and jacaranda from Brazil, no mangos, bananas, oranges, etc.

Now I am sourcing, in Mexico, 'hairy' peanuts and curry leaf trees. The curry leaf tree grows from fresh seed and it might not be allowed through.

ps thanks for the tradewinds link - that is a good one.
