Hi,
Everyone,
I am passing this email forwarded
to me this morning. It's about a medication that
is familiar to many of us. Note also the FDA 's
comments
at the end of the
message.
I received this information
from a friend whose mother recently passed
away.
Apparently, this was
caused by a medication
that is deadly. Here are
the details and I suggest you pass it on to your
loved ones and
others.
Phenylpropanolamine
(PPA)
I would like to thank those
of you who expressed condolences on the recent
passing of my mother. She suffered a
hemorrhagic stroke while she was driving home
from my house at 7:30 and passed away at
8:30. My mother's stroke and passing
was an enormous shock to my family because she
did not have any symptoms or risk factors for a
stroke. J ust the week before she had gone to
her doctor for a check up and received a clean
bill of health. She did, however, develop
a cold while she was visiting me and had
taken Alka Seltzer
Cold Plus for 3
days. Since her passing, we have learned
that Alka
Seltzer is one of
the many cold medicines that contains
Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which can
cause hemorrhagic
strokes (cerebral
bleeding) even with
the first use. I am forwarding a list of
other medications that currently use PPA. These
medicines are supposedly being recalled but my
mother just purchased this medication less than
two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical
companies
have known about this danger
for years, we unfortunately, did
not.
I urge you to review the
list of medicines with PPA and avoid these
medications. All drugs
containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are
dangerous. You may want to try calling the
800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire
about a REFUND. Please read this
CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on
to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything
containing this ingredient. It has been
linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke
(bleeding
in brain) among
women ages 18-49 in the three days after
starting use of medication. Problems were
not found in men, but the FDA recommended that
everyone (even children) seek alternative
medicine.

E-raq:
Well you managed to get me excited since I have been taking Alka-Seltzer Plus Capsules for a week or so. Grabbed the package to check the composition. They contain Phenylephrine hydrochloride. Since it sounds somewhat similar, I went to Senior Google but ran across the following:
http://www.snopes.com/medical/drugs/ppa.asp
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blppa.htm
Now I am just sooooo confused!

Re: Medication warning, serious
Well, as a few people have said after email account hackings, don't click on links. I didn't and this is what happens. Sorry, so kick my teeth in, whatever. Yes the recall is 13 years old, so this was obviously yet another attempt to hack into my email account which is also serious.
So, let THIS be a warning.

Well, you can't be too careful these days. Ya never know when some drug or another is going to cause death, or some horrible new bug is going to whistle in out of nowhere, usually in a snowbird, or some bastage is going to try and hack into your computer, again. This is the second time I've had some suspicious email in 2 weeks. That's why you don't click on any dammed links. Just sayin'.
Maybe we ought to move this to the tech section huh?

Re: Medication warning, serious
You can die of a stroke from taking aspirin, too. For those people who can never be too safe, I think we should also support the ban of another very dangerous chemical.
Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide! The Invisible Killer - Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. DHMO withdrawal means certain death.
Dihydrogen monoxide:
• is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
• contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
• can cause very severe burns.
• accelerates corrosion of most metals.
• may cause electrical failures.
• has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars in damages.
Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
• as an industrial solvent and coolant.
• in nuclear power plants.
• in the production of Styrofoam.
• as a fire retardant.
• in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
• as an additive in most "junk-foods" and many “whole” food products.
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal.
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.
What you don't know can hurt you and others throughout the world!!!

The formula for dihydrogen monoxide is H2O
Negative characteristics can be mitigated by combining it with sufficient quantities of whisky

Bingo, it's called sterilizing the water.
