There are lots of other excellent contractors, but if I have not done business with them, I cannot recommend them.

After hiring MIGUEL JIMINEZ, plumber/electrician, I highly recommend him.
He's capable of doing the work, caring, reasonably priced. accessible and speaks fairly good english.
He even drove me around to look at faucets.

After buying a house, upon first entering, we had many problems and he fixed whatever was needed. One of the issues was the water pressure would go down to a trickle. He fixed it but the problem returned. When he came back and I had not called him, he was upset with me that I didn't make an emergency call. That's a good plumber to me. He would have come over any time of day in what he calls an "emergency". I didn't bother because he was scheduled to come 1 day later. I decided to go out and have fun instead and wait for 1 more day to do laundry

He was recommended to me by a neighbor and one of our other neighbors uses him. She is very happy. He cleans aljibes too,

Would like to see Mike the Mechanic, Cel 333-846-9983 added to this list for auto repair. See related reviews in Out on the Mirador and TOB. He will come to you and has saved some people a lot of money on problems MISdiagnosed by other area mechanics.

Lists like these can be useful guidelines and a place to start.  They also can become dated.  And for some reason around here, it seems like consistency is a problem.

Sometimes people are going great guns and doing well .... and they are the 'flavor' of the day and then things change.  But, they remain on these lists.

I've used this contractor and if he were on site, he seemed to be quite good.  But, I seldom saw him and he was trying to work the project via 'telephone.' I saw him on Fridays to collect money and maybe 10 or 15 minutes once during the week.  Some email exchange and one or two telephone calls in the crises of the moment.  In several emails, I mentioned that it was not my job to 'monitor' his crew, but that was ignored.  So, the crew overall was good, but needed to be supervised and that absent.  As a result, throughout the contract there was one major problem after another, and for all of which I was billed.   Besides the problems, the finish quality was poor, including leaks in the roof and more.

Yes, there was a written estimate, stating lots of things were 'included'.  In a very few cases the 'included' item gave an estimated amount.    When I started purchasing some items that were 'included' I asked about the range within which I had to work and followed that.  I was told that what I paid for directly would be deducted from the final bill.  However, the amount deducted on the final was not the amount expended for the item, but 50% or less.

In realizing his absence, I asked the contractor how many other projects he was working on at the same time since I did not seem to have his attention or time; the answer was 4.    So, I did not get his expertise for the project.  It got to the point that he was giving me excuses as to why things were not getting done.  In once case, the subcontractor he was blaming was someone I knew (and who is on this list and 'tested') and immediately called the subcontractor who said he had not even spoken to the contractor.

So, please note that John's list of January 2013 is now nearly two years old.
I was very disappointed with the experience I had.

Spencer provides some insight into dealing with written estimate, payment schedules, etc. and the woes of ones written by the "contractor".
