Thought I'd post this as Nicaragua often comes up as a less-discovered expat alternative. Have spent quite a bit of time there myself, but up in the highlands where the coffee grows (much more pleasant climate but otherwise my experiences were much like this guy's). Cheaper than Mexico, yes - but there are reasons why!
