Has anyone eaten here recently? If so, what kinds of food do they serve and did you enjoy it? Thanks so much in advance for the info.

Didn't seem to get much of a response so I guess I'll speak up. The Superior is a damn good restaurant. They serve a mixed menu of Mexican and American-style food. Can't recommend anything in particular...it''s all good. They keep the place clean and the service is excellent. The menu is bi-lingual. I think they speak some English but I can't be sure since I usually just fake it with my limited Spanish.

For those of you who are reading this from outside Mexico--Ajijic and Chapala are a five minute drive from each other. This restaurant is on Chapala's main street. Anyone who doesn't have a clue doesn't venture out from home enough.

It's located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Madero and Hidalgo. (Coming from Ajijic, it's where you make the left-hand turn in order to cruise Main Street.)

You make an interesting point! I believe that the Superior Restaurant has been in business in Chapala since we first started traveling to the area in the late 90's. Back in the "day", one would see a "coffee klatch" of Gringos sitting at the sidewalk tables and chairs each morning. This carried on until City Hall mandated the removal of all sidewalk tables and chairs. We never tried this establishment but getting out more with one's eyes open certainly made us aware that it is there.
I fully realize that people have differing priorities but I continue to be amazed when reading the forums by the number of known residents who either don't get out or simply fail to observe what is available when they are out moving around. So as not to start a "flaming war", I won't make any suggestions as to why I think this is but I would think that simple observation or awareness would make life so much easier and complete?

I get around a lot. I used to sell advertising for the Review. I haven't eaten at the Superior for years, and though the name rang a bell, I was glad to see someone post the location to jog my memory.
Enough judgments, people, okay?

When we were in Ajijic and didn't have a car we rode the little local bus to Chapala. Were familiar with everything there. My husband even joined the Legion there. Nice people!

Did it dawn on you that when you make a statement like: "Some of us from Ajijic don't have a clue as we don't know Chapala
well.", it could be construed as sounding elitist or above knowing anything about Chapala? After all it is a whopping 5 miles down the road and by some people's evaluation has a great deal more to offer than Ajijic.

Please do remember that some people have mobility issues and cannot walk far. We tend to choose Restaurants that have easy parking. It is one of the reasons that we do not frequent many of the downtown restaurants in Ajijic...and we LIVE in Ajijic.

My best Mexican/US friend takes her main meal there daily. She usually has the daily special. It must be a treat cause she sure is one.

Why did they stop outdoor seating with a climate so beautiful?RoofBob wrote:I first ate at the Superior in '72, it was good then and still is, miss the out door seating though.

Ms. Mac:
I heard two differing reasons and have no idea of the accuracy:
1) People thought they appeared tacky and City Hall went along.
2) Other businesses were complaining about the restricted flow on the sidewalks.
Maybe RoofBob can clarify?

Re: Superior Restaurant in Chapala
It was several new mayors ago. The bylaw was aimed at keeping the sidewalks clear for tourists. (We're pretty sure there was some kind of special interest lobbying involved.) We all hoped that 2 years later, when the next Presidente came in, he would sweep that aside. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

What a shame. Even here in Missouri the restaurants have outside seating on the cooperative months.

Quoting Ferret: "Please do remember that some people have mobility issues and cannot walk far."
Point well taken but I was talking about riding around in one's vehicle and paying attention to what is in the field of vision. Given the fact that we only amy shown up a couple of times a year along the north shore, I am still amazed by how little people actual see and retain when shopping at Soraiana, SuperLake, Paz or WallyWorld!

Re: Superior Restaurant in Chapala
Neil, if I'm driving Lakeside, I've got both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road in front of me and in back of me. I LOVE being the passenger and spot all kinds of interesting places to check out.
Your comment about being a visitor and all that you see reminds me of living in Vancouver for 18 months. Every Monday, people who had lived in Vancouver all their lives, always asked what we had done and where we had gone that weekend. We knew our time there was limited and we took advantage of every second to see as much as possible. They, who had lived there a while, hadn't seen many of the things that we did. Guess people get complacent when they think there's always tomorrow.

Plus I believe that each individual cares about different things, kind of like food, each to their own. Since I no longer drive rarely do I know where we’re going but I certainly see all the flowers, trees and people that I never saw before.

Re: Superior Restaurant in Chapala
They have put up car-proof barriers on the sidewalk. If you look at the left side of the Superior's door (the one facing Madero) you will see a concrete patch. That's where the rumored narcos crashed their car during a running gun battle last year....
RE: Superior Retaurant
John and I had lunch today at the Superior Restaurant in Chapala. While I do not care for most tradicional Mexican food (preferring Taco Bell fare), today I cleaned my plate. Food and service was wonderful and Margaritas are only $25 pesos. We will definitely go back!
