Meatless Monday's
Now i will admit to thinking that parts of California can be very strange but: "'Meatless Mondays': LA urges residents to turn vegetarian one day a week"?
With all the problems they seem to have, is this time well spent?

Probably, the entire state is practically bankrupt. It would do the fat cats some good to cut back a bit.

Re: Meatless Monday's
Since I've been learning how to cook, i realize how little meat other nationalities actually eat. Our family loves pasta e fagioli, a meat soup dish from the Olive Garden. I've been making a mock version for years with hamburger. Looked up an authentic recipe for pasta fagioli recently and low and behold, no meat. It's a simple pasta and bean soup. You don't need meat with beans. It's true, too much meat is not healthy for us and Americans add meat to dishes that are all vegetable. Recipes are adapted by adding American meat. We all thought meat wasn't eaten so much because it was expensive. Well, it's not good to eat so much of it. Makes us sick.
My freezer is packed with my homemade frozen meals. Everything from pizza to pumpkin soup, not one meat dish. Chicken pot pie yes but i don't have any red meat in the house. Mahi mahi, shrimp, and a little chicken. The rest is fresh produce, nuts, long grain brown rice, lentils, dried beans and flour. I could easily be a vegetarian without pain.

Re: Meatless Monday's
In the Chiapas Highlands, where we live several months out of each year, primarily in the winter, local indigenous people rarely eat meat or poultry but exist primarily on vegetables and fruits with some fish. On the other hand, the mestizos who occupy the capital city of Tuxtla Gutierrez eat lots of meat and poultry and are, consequently, much porkier just like your reporter Dawg. This vegetarianism has less to do with principle and more to do with the necessity of beheading and skinning and gutting aniimals for the table as their meat products do not come wrapped in plastic a la Chedraui or Sam´s Club but squawking and bleating and stinking under the knife. Damn, they produce fine fresh produce down there.

"Meatless Mondays"...
Wash your mouth out with soap.
Every day is a meat day (except the fish days)

Every day is a day where I get to choose what I eat! I don't need anyone dictating whether or not I look anemic or not!

I see your point Neil...it's the idea, California has always been a trend setter. At least it's in the right direction of eating healthier but you're right, if it ever led to taking the freedom away to be anemic, that's your choice. Forget about beets, spinach, liver, black bleans, oysters etc.

Whatever...each to his/her own.
On the other hand, when were pasta, beans and other legumes introduced into the diet?
Hunter society?...meat, meat and more meat...and not much else.

I'm sorry but I don't get your point. I scanned the link you posted and can see no relevance.
I believe we're talking about the food chain.
My point is that Marco Polo brought pasta to Italy from China...corn came for the "New World" etc.
Before, perhaps the 16th century, you ate what was grown or hunted within 20 miles of your home...and probably eaten for sustenance not enjoyment.
Remember that it was once thought that tomatoes were poisonous...and who decided that meat should be cooked?

You bet on California being a trend setter - trends many of us can do without!

Re: Meatless Monday's
I have some photos of menus made by Vatel for the court at Vaux le Viconte in France in the 17th century. The nobility ate a huge variety of meat almost no veggies in these days.
They ate everything that moved from beef to porc, chicken, all types of venaison and from swann to faisans to quail etc..
Meanwhile the farmers ate very little meat. Henry IV who died in 1632 had made it his goal for the people (not the court) to be afford to afford one chicken a week per family, the rest was bread from wheat and mostly root vegetables and what ever they could find or grow) and probably lots of eggs although they had no eggs in the dead of the winter. they also developped over 300 varieties of cheeses and had fruit in the summer. It was illegal for them to hunt or catch wild animals.
Huge difference between the have and have nots.

Re: Meatless Monday's
California is a wasteland IMHO. We struck it off our list of places to visit over 8 years ago. It was the no smoking thing back then.
Once off our list it is permanent. Never been back, never will go back. PUNTO.
Our last trip through, en route to Fiji and Australia, was such a nightmare, it is no longer even fit as a stopping off place.
