Car inspection registration insurance questions
Hey guys, how's everything?
I've been thinking (don't say it!!) about the consequences of bringing
a vehicle down into Mexico. Here are my questions:
When going back to the US with this car it probably will have lapsed inspection, registration.
What does one do after crossing the border not to be picked up by the first
Smokey cruising the highways who is on his way to a personal record for giving out
tickets to support the local municipality.
Are there places very close to the border in, say Texas, that can give a reasonable
inspection without hitting you up and falsely claiming you need $$$$ of work to
pass inspection?
Same question about registration, since it is renewed yearly.
Are there any timing tips of what time of year to get renewals?
Also, what can be done about insurance? I don't think people in Mexico now would want to
pay money to a US insurance company and also for Mexican insurance just to keep some
policy active in case of returning to the US. As far as I know all insurance companies always
ask if you have current insurance before writing a contract. I have State Farm now and have
been with them for 10+ years.
I'm sure there must be some explanations and procedures that the experienced
residents among this forum have for these issues.
Thanks for sharing .........

UnCoco,
What sort of inspection are you referring to? Each state has their own requirements. Not something a Texas cop would know anything about when you have plates from another state.
The way we manage is; 1. Keep our registration current. Easy to do for some states, those from "difficult" states change their registration to South Dakota. 2. We too have State Farm, we have our agent suspend all but comprehensive coverage. If go north we have full coverage reinstated.
