Front License Plates
On TOB, there is a thread about a guy getting his car impounded because his front and rear plates didn't match. Like many NOB vehicles, his State (Florida) only issues a rear plate and he has always had the original European style plate on the front of his Mercedes. Years ago, the police in Mexico were known for pulling over NOB vehicles without a front plate and many of us solved the issue by putting a souvenir type plate in the front. Apparently, there is a provision in the Jalisco code that says any non matching front plate is considered to be falsifying an official document.
So I guess it is one of those damned if you do/damned if you don't situations?

I got the idea he was not very humble while talking to the cop. Attitude never helps
Re: Front License Plates
Seems to me that tooling around Mexico in a classic Mercedes with a vanity plate on the back and a German plate on the front is asking for trouble, but that's just me.
It was a hugely entertaining story though.

While he attempts to convince otherwise, I believe you are correct. However, someone posted a link to a GUADALAJARA REPORTER article on this:
http://theguadalajarareporter.com/news-mainmenu-82/guadalajara/23027-us-missionary-falls-victim-to-license-plate-fiasco.html
We have a Route 66 souvenir plate on the front of our van and have had Federales check it at checkpoints in Michoacan and Guanajuato with no issues.

Gawd...........I'm happy to have a Mexican plated car now. No more little cop on moto following us around, looking for excuses.
I thought the Captain's story indicated he was polite during his ordeal.

Except for when he called the ticket basura and the transito thought he was being called basura.gringal wrote:Gawd...........I'm happy to have a Mexican plated car now. No more little cop on moto following us around, looking for excuses.

Yeah, we didn't get the whole story. The old coot probably pulled his Captain and Lord of the High Seas pose...and got busted down a few ranks by the transito.

Re: Front License Plates
A friend of mine recently was ticketed by the little moto cop for not having any front plate. The vehicle was from a state that doesn't require one and he had no license plate holder for one. He did have the front plate of the current set on the dashboard displayed prominently but that wasn't good enough to escape a ticket.

Re: Front License Plates
I come from a family of merchant seamen. Mu old man sailed Chief Electrician, 1 of his brothers retired as Chief Engineer from States Line and 1 was a union port agent for many years. Another uncle was also a chief engineer for American Mail Line. Most of the males in our extended families made at least a few trips to sea. The old captain on the other thread mentions being skipper on passenger vessels. It is very doubtful that these were American flagged ships as outside I think of a Disney owned cruise ship there haven't been any American flag passenger ships operating off the east coast.
There was an old joke that seamen used to tell.
Q: What's the difference between a sea story and a fairy tale?
A: One starts out "once upon a time" and the other starts out "this is no shit".

How could one possibly question this fine gentleman's credentials when he provides a photo of himself in uniform?

This is the side of you we enjoy, what is all this other shit. I’d would really enjoy hearing about your family and stop bitching if another doesn’t reach your beliefs, because we all belong somewhere, maybe not in your boat, but somewhere.

When you say we, that means you speak for yourself and someone else. Who might that be?
The rest of your post is just unintelligible gibberish.

I got the impression the good Captain snuck passed the nurse's station and managed to get ahold of some car keys.

I got both of those impressions too. I imagine those guys were entertained by it all.
I also recently got pulled over by one of the transitos for not having a plate in the front. No ticket, no impound, he made me promise that I I'd contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in CA and request another plate to put on the front. We parted new-best-friends. Until the next time he gets a wild hair and I happen to pass at the same time. Vamos a ver.
