Re: world cup final
Spain pulled their share of interference.
We were way surprised the referees didn't call foul more often. The game has gotten a lot rougher. And when did this sliding under and into a players feet become such common practice?
I understand they are thinking of changing the rules so that the instant replay will be considered in decisions. Considering the number of contested plays, it might just be a good idea. Lizzy

Re: world cup final
Pity is that there is no way to score the players on their considerable skill on the field. We must be satisfied with the occasional "goool!" Lizzy

Re: world cup final
NO consideration is being given to instant reply, Sepp Blatter is very clear on that. What will be considered is electronic goal detection.

Re: world cup final
Well, electronic goal detection will definitely improve the situation, but those turkey referees sure did miss-take an awful lot of the action. Lizzy

Re: world cup final
I thought Webb did a pretty good job yesterday. The only issue I had with him was giving only a yellow card to de Jong for the hard boot to the chest. That should have been a red card as the action was flagrant and violent.

Re: world cup final
Agreed. That was bad behavior.
During the earlier games, though, it seemed that a lot of the action was violent. Certainly more so than we are accustomed to seeing. I think that is a step backward. They don't have to do that. Lizzy

Re: world cup final
That has been going on since the 1970's at the very least; I was in Germany during that time and watched soccer frequently. The rules say that it isn't a foul if the "attacker" contacts the ball first. That's one reason the "foul" isn't called as often as some think it should be.bobnliz wrote:And when did this sliding under and into a players feet become such common practice?

Johan Cruyff, the most famous Nederlands National team player, lambasted the play of his country's team. Read here:

Ok, Lehrer. So as long as the guy doing the sliding, the "attacker", gets to the ball first... no foul. I see. All a matter of timing.
However, it sure does seem to interrupt the flow of the game, all those passes what get interrupted. Lizzy

Re: world cup final
Not quite. I merely said that I had observed it during that time. I really don't know when the rule was begun, since I wasn't a fan before the 1970's.bobnliz wrote:According to Lehrer, that's when it began to be thus. Lizzy
