No, I know the provenance of the riddle but I just had the impression that you were looking for a different one of the many answers that have since been suggested for it.

Carroll himself once offered this solution: The way that they are alike is that they are unalike in every way.

Just thinking about this and I think lunateak is right (but forgot to phrase as a question!!) I can't think of a man-made material that is more plentiful than concrete.
