A sign of the times, just like American companies hiring Mexicans. Good for their businesses.

You might be able to stay home (say in the Atlantic Provinces), and work for $14./hr., but I don't think that you can afford to move 5-6000 kliks for that kind of money.

There are a huge number of people who commute from the east to the western provinces on a regular basis, but that is for a liveable wage.
