Re: Fiesta!!!
I thought 5 de Mayo was mainly celebrated NoB,mostly in order to sell tortilla chips, pre-mixed guacamole and salsa.

The above article provides some info on the Battle of Puebla and other facts about this holiday. I was surprised to read the following: "The battle marks Mexico’s only major military success since its independence from Spain in 1821."

Re: Fiesta!!!
Cinco de Mayo has nothing to do with any battle. The fifth of May 1954 celebrates the birth of my first son. It has been adopted by many places in The US, and a few cities in México, like Puebla as a reason to have a fiesta.
If your health insurance is paid up-to-date, just ask my son what he thinks about all of the people getting soused up on his birthday. There is no joy at the bottom of a bottle.

It seems the French army had a bad case of dysentery and couldn't fight that day. Mexicans won. Hot dang.

Just what my maid would say. She says it about the Guadalajarans on weekends.

It is mainly celebrated NOB. I saw an ad on TV last night for party supplies for Cinco de Mayo.

Re: Fiesta!!!
I had read somewhere that the battle of Cinco de Mayo was very noteworthy in México because it was the only battle the Mexican Army ever won on their home ground against a well equipped invading army up to that time.
I also read that the French army thought there was only one fort to overcome, not two. Stories and myths abound, we weren't there, so all we can do now is speculate, as the old saying goes “History is written by the victors.”

Cinco de Mayo is, I suppose, a Chicano festival... began in LA don't you know?
Denver's "Cinco" is legendary too,
and low riders abound...
Speakers blaring to the max
and bouncing up and down... Lizzy
