Used to imply "expensive" or "costly", but sounds to me (with my very limited knowledge of Spanish) like "dear", which is out of use these days for most of us.

You are right, HelperGuy, the root of caro is from the Latin word "carus" for dear, beloved. Greatly valued; dear; loved; lovable; of high price; expensive.
