"Marketing of pirated merchandise
According to an article originally published in the Dallas News, Mexico’s drug gangs now make almost as much money from pirated merchandise as from their trade in illicit drugs. By some estimates, the proliferation of pirated brand name goods has resulted in more than 450,000 manufacturing job losses and has caused the demise of many textile, clothing and shoe-making firms. Officials say that pirated videos account for as many as 9 out of every 10 movies sold across the country."

Ferret:
The problem is that they have branched out to so many legal businesses to launder the vast sums of money that each of us could conceivably be helping them out with absolutely no knowledge. Two interesting articles:

I respect your position Ferret but "When in Rome"anyway most the movies they make these days are'nt worth 20 pesos let alone what they want you to pay for them in a regular store.Every friday at the tianguies I buy my 6 year old a movie,if I had to pay 150 pesos for them he would'nt be watching many movies.

It is hard to buy original movies unless you buy them at Wallmart or some other large store that do not carry the movies we watch.
When my sister was here we looked all over the place for original cd´s and dvd´s as she cannot take pirated copies back. We ended up buying some originals in Tlaquepaque. A long way to go to find some ce´s or dvd´s. As Viajero says the original are way too expensive anyways.
I used to work for the company that owned Universal and we use to get the original dvds for 20 cents so there is plenty of profit in the dvds, I do not know who makes all the money but if there was not such a huge mark up more originals would be sold.
A way to discourage the pirates is to cut off their profits. Why should I pay more for a dvd than the price of a seat at a movie theater?

Re: You Are Not a Mexican - Will Ferrell
Granted the actual material cost for producing DVD's is very nominal 15 -25 cents and that is why the cartels can produce and sell them so cheap. But, it is far different when marketing/advertising, actual movie production costs, actors salaries, actor's royalties, etc are also calculated into the cost of the DVD. In many ways, it is much the same with music CD's.
The fact of the matter is that this is all copyrighted material and each of us can handle that aspect any way we choose!
