Is there any location in Ajijic or Chapala that provides services similar to safety deposit boxes you find in the bank NOB?

Not like NOB. Generally banks don't have them and if they do they are very expensive.

Bancomer has them according to their website, but not necessarily in all branches, so one may have to go to Guadalajara. I guess you can call their toll free number and find out. I imagine the other banks have them as well.

I'll be glad to store your valuables in my aljibe for a modest fee.

They way I heard it, the banks don't want to be the "robbery opportunity" around here. Maybe just rumor.

Gringal:

In view of the fact that Guadalajara set a all time new record of bank robberies in 2011 with 100 something - I would say they already are "robbery opportunities"!

Besides most robbers would want cash not jewelery and other personal items.

Unfortunately the robbers wouldn't know which ones contained cash only.
I've always wanted to rig a home safe that would blow potassium permanganate all over the thieves...they'd literally be caught "red handed".
The powder is activated by sweat or water and stains skin a reddish purple that takes months to come off.
Info learned from a Trixie Belden book that was read when I was twelve.

The point I was trying to make was if you had a business that was strictly safety deposit boxes it would likely be less of a target than a bank.

When I was looking for one, I was told that they were constantly broken into so all the banks got rid of them. I had a friend who worked in a hotel in Guadalajara let me use one because I was in a bad situation and couldn't find one anywhere else.

Safe deposit boxes have an interesting history, too much to list here but fascinating and funny. Too much of a liability for the banks compared to the return. There was a bank by Plaza Del Sol that had them and they tunneled in and spent the weekend breaking into them. Then the poor people who lived in the ghetto traveled by bus and were demanding the return of their $7,000,000 cash they had inside. True story, I'm taking a banking law class and the teacher is an attorney who was working on the incident.

I also understand Banamex has them. I called a few years ago and they said you needed a large deposit - I think it was 10,000 pesos and then you had a waiting period. I didn't follow up on it.

My banker said that the same thing happened many years ago in Chapala, and the insurance companies had to pay out whatever people claimed were in them. (perhaps the same story, and my banker just said it was Chapala)

My banking law teacher said that the bank offered $60,000,000 to the group and said they could all split it among themselves or the bank would fight to the end and they'd have large legal fees. The clients took the offer. I recall him saying there were 40 boxes broken into.

A good movie from Spain is Caja 507, a thriller and a great move and involves a bank safe deposit heist.
