Beachgoer's Fantasy Empty Beachgoer's Fantasy

Mahahual on Mexico's Caribbean coast there is a beach as white as flour, turquoise waters, and a world apart from the Cancun resort complexes 150 miles to the north.
It is especially cursed by seaborne rubbish that's on the rise the world over. This stretch of the southern Yucatan Peninsula happens to sit along the path of regional currents that act like an aquatic conveyor carrying a steady stream of plastic garbage from the Caribbean and Central and South America. Much of the flotsam washes ashore in and around Mahahual, a small but growing beach town about 40 miles north of the Belize border.
What a shame.

What are you trying to say, awana? Dawg has witnessed firsthand the terrible scourge of detritus washing upon the Caribbean shore at Mahahual in Quintana Roo spoiling otherwise pristine and even deserted beach fronts for kilometers and it is astonishing to see the amount of garbage that sometimes washes up near Mahahual - especailly, in my experience, along the beachfront road heading toward Xcalak. As you state, the detritus is a reult of sea currents and its existence simply attests to the disgusting disregard for the environment in the Caribbean and everywhere else exhibited by the human race. This is no reflection on Mahahual as I´m certain you agree. It makes you and me both sick to see this in such a beautiful rural environment as it must everyone who witnesses this tragedy. That, however, is no worse than viewing the garbage strewn waterways of Mozambique or Chennai or a thousand other places humans desecrate. Just because it is an isolated area, we tend to be more surprised than we would be in Mumbai. There is, however, nothing to be done about this but mourn the state of human affairs. And we are made in God´s image - pick your God.

These days, you just have to take a trash bag to the beach and clean up the part of it you want to use. We stopped going to Santiago because the beach is so dirty. This plastic crap is everywhere.

I´m not sure I follow your logic here, MC. This is the Southern Mexic Forum and, while your comment regarding the detritus on the beach is cogent anywhere, as far as I know, Santiago is located at Manzanillo which could never be construed to be anywhere near Southern Mexico. My comment, as one who spends much time ion the beaches of Southern Mexiico as well as the beaches around here in Jalisco, is not meant to disparage your comment but I want to make sure that readers unfamiliar with these important geographical differences, not confuse Southern Mexico with Western Pacific Mexico. The difference in the two regions is remarkable.
