I see one event reported by a friend, not the victim. I don't consider reports by friends or others to be 100% reliable.

John
No kidding, if that person was kidnapped do you think they had access to Internet?
The fact that a friend reported it makes it untrue? I can see some of the details may be different but I would thing the major event is still tue.

Two major events in Chapala this week - that's why I posted. Many of this boards readers live in Chapala or frequent downtown Chapala.

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
I went to Lakeside Crime and did a bit of cruising around. Low and behold, I find buried within the site an announcement that CSI apparently announced yesterday that the promised anonymous Hotline is now up and operating.
Here is a dumb question: Why hasn't that number been broadcasted all over every forum and put in a prominent placement on Lakeside Crime?
It is almost like it is being kept a secret!

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
Frankly with the exception of these crimes which were committed against Mexicans who probably don't speak english I think any foreign resident needs to get off their duff and start reporting.
Maybe the Mexicans can also set up a similar service and get the word out about what has been happening to them.
I just spent a couple of hours at a Fracc. security meeting. Apparently there were 7 robberies here in the last year, and nobody has reported jack squat, either to Chapala crime, or apparently to the Ministerio PĂşblico. What's up with that?

raqueteer - They're either too lazy, the robberies were insignificant in terms of goods taken (usually in dollar amounts the amount taken is small) or they think their reports will fall on deaf ears like the Ministerio. Just my opinion. I assume the Fracc you're talking about was outside of Ajijic or Chapala.

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
From the well hidden blurb that I read about the Hotline, it appears that it is answered in Canada with both English and Spanish operators available. Another interesting aspect is that: there is no reward system at this point in time.

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
Most probably see it as a waste of time since the perception is that the MP doesn't really care. On the other hand it appears to me like a lot more crime is being reported versus a year ago and if there are ever any busts then the reporting may continue to increase.

John our robbery was pretty insignificant in terms of things taken, however getting prints and establishing patterns is important. Yes, the Fracc. was in the Municipality of Jocotepec. Here's what we were told. They keep a registry of prints and if they can match prints taken at your house with those already on file, an arrest can be made.
We now have a reporting sheet with all details of the crime, ours is going out by email next week to all residents, and security cameras are being installed.
What can the M.P. do without information?

Since they are claiming to be using the Crime Stoppers model, here are two examples of how they get the info out NOB:

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
Not everyone is on the chat groups and knows about Lakesidecrime.com. Most of my friends are not on the chat boards. And when some people are burgled or robbed, they are too traumatized to think about emailing details. So it's important to report crime you know about and are certain happened. Which is why I go out and put up posters with little tear off thingys. This time of year the bulletin boards are full and they barely stay up a day due to competition for space. Before the snow birds got here they stayed up quite awhile and I know people read them.
When there was a lot of ATM fraud happening I put up signs, beware of ATM fraud. And the one machine at Scotia that did not have problems I would over hear people talking about the posters and where the safe machines are and not to use the rest. You notice ATM fraud has pretty much stopped lakeside - at least nothing is getting reported.

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
More & more, people should be engaging with these chat boards... they are a tremendous resourse...
Why just in the past couple of weeks, I've inquired about good restaurants, taxi services, out of town hotels...
If ever my house were to be broken into.... I'm sure, I'd be making inquiries " where to dump the body "

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
Just keep a shovel and a big bag of lime in the garden shed Hocks.........the tomatoes will be much larger in that part of the yard next season.
Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
I'm impressed that they actually took prints for a garden variety type burglary.raqueteer wrote:johninajijic wrote:raqueteer - They're either too lazy, the robberies were insignificant in terms of goods taken (usually in dollar amounts the amount taken is small) or they think their reports will fall on deaf ears like the Ministerio. Right you are Chris, one can hardly accuse them of not caring when we had the peritos on our doorstep less than 8 hours after the official report.

Simpsca:
So it is a given that many foreign residents and it is a given that many Mexicans do not participate on the forums - so are you suggesting that CSI's Hotline number will be publicized though osmosis? Many of us tried to sleep with our heads on a book in college and that learning process in college and it didn't seem to work. To get the number out or broadcast to a wide audience Facebook and other such social networks are not the answer either.

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
Any good gardening center or Home Depot should sell lime in the quantities you are looking for..........
Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
Lime is jal (pronounced hal) and you can get it in any hardware store in large quantities.

The 2 stories posted about Chapala are true, easily verified if you live here. Victims were both Mexicans who probably read the site but who have friends that do.

Re: Chapala on Lakesidecrime.com
I know reporting crime is a royal pain in the ass, but doing so helps establish crime patterns. It's the only way police are going to know where they need to be patrolling more diligently.
