New southern beltway will alleviate heavy traffic on Periferico
From the GUADALAJARA REPORTER:
"Also known as the “Libramiento del Sur,” the 111-kilometer highway will run from Zapotlanejo to El Arenal, bypassing Guadalajara in order to ease the transportation of cargo not destined for the city. It will benefit trucks coming from the busy port of Manzanillo, as well as relieving Lazaro Cardenas and the Periferico ring road of a number of heavy goods vehicles.
“We estimate that construction will be underway around early March,” said Heriberto Gonzalez Rodriguez, director of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) in Jalisco. Before then, surveyors will continue preliminary work until the end of January.........."
Not sure of the accuracy of this map but from this drawing, it appears that traveling to either the west or east sides of the City will be easier from the Lake Chapala area.

Yes, particularly to the east. What I find interesting is that this comes on the heels of all that road construction that basically parallels this road but closer to GDL that was done for the express purpose of providing a bypass for truck traffic. True, that work only went as far as Tala.
Given that they are constructing from east to west, we might see that east leg open in a relatively short time. Not only would it cut more time than the bypass, the cuotas seem to be safer from the kind of police robbery that has been occurring on the existing bypass. As I understand it, it will cross Chapala highway just over the hill from Ixtlahuacan.
It will be well worth the toll cost IMO when it opens and we sure will use it. And since Carlos Slim is putting up the money, you can bet that it will be done right, unlike the really shoddy construction of the cobbled together bypass.

Clue me in, why would Carlos Slim put up the money? And what makes you think it will be done correctly?

John:
If this highway is to be a cuota, then private companies will collect the tolls and maintain the cuota. Carlos Slim and his network of companies already manage a number of the Mexican cuotas.

It is to be a cuota and the article specifically stated that one of Slim's companies is fronting the money for it.

I am assuming that info was in the full article? The restricted version didn't seem to mention that fact.
