This site is devoted to tracking the number of narco related killings in Mexico on a Google map.
Walter McKay a former Vancouver police detective, is now a security consultant in Mexico, where he moved six years ago. You can read more about him on the site's home page where it says About.

As well as consulting for individuals and businesses operating in Mexico, McKay has a website that maps and tabulates narco-related killings in the country. The results show Mexico had 18,601 murders in 2011. That's about 51 per day, up from 37 per day in 2010.

Which has nothing to do with private citizens murdered, of which there are few, as well as showing the number by say GDL, Chapala, etc.
