Zipperheads
One of my facebook contacts posted that she had read on Yahoo about a Canadian couple and their baby who were killed in a car accident in Jamaica!!???
I wonder how many Canadians were killed in the Atlantic Provinces lately. She didn't know them or anything, just that they were killed in Jamaica.
Guess I'd better change my plans! Jamaica definitely isn't safe. I'm so tired of this type of BS!

Re: Zipperheads
I just read this morning in the Canadian press over the internet that 0f the 4,000,000 Canadians who have visited Mexico over the past few years, 15 have been killed while here in Mexico for various reasons. Then, in another Canadian press report, I read where a student and naturaized Canadian in BC who was a Mexican national was mudrered along with her boyfriend on a deserted beach in Huatulco and this follows the murder of another BC person killed in Malaque when confronting home burglars.
I feel sorry for these crimes but there are lessons to be learned from these events for those of us still alive. We live fairly near near Huatulco and know it is imprudent to walk along deserted beaches in Huatulco or anywhere in Oaxaca State and, if one happens upon a home burglary it is best not to confront the burglars and attempt tp thwart their crime in progress but to get the hell out of there if possible and seek help. These same rules of prudence apply in many places in the world. For some reason, Mexico seems to rank special attention form the Canadian press.

15 out of 4,00,000 visitors. BFD. Why would the news media bother mentioning a useless statistic like this? Nothing else for them to report.
I wonder how many Canadians were killed in the US, South America or any other large country?

Re: Zipperheads
I think if you happen to be 1 of the 15 you'd care about the killing, but it would not really be an issue if it were reported in the press.
Re: Zipperheads
The point that I was trying to make is that people seem to think it's worse to get killed in a car accident in Jamaica or Mexico than at home.
Personally, I would rather have my epitaph read "Shot in Mexico" than "passed away at the Charlotte Co., a victim of overindulgence.

Re: Zipperheads
The Canadian Press have a long history of exaggeration, and restating prior deaths as related to whatever current death has occurred. They have been called on it a number of times, however the press being what it is there have been no changes. I might add here that one particular death which was accurately described as an automobile accident, and confirmed as such by the Mexican authorities, continued to hold sway as some hideous plot against Canadians. The Canadian authorities were in full agreement after looking at the forensics and doing their own post mortem, however the press, as usual, ignored all salient facts and failed to mention the Canadian follow up examinations of all evidence.

Re: Zipperheads
The CBC today reported that 15 Canadians had been killed in Mexico since 2006, I wonder why they wouldn't report how many people have been killed in, Vanc., Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, ect, ect ect during the same time period? Seems to me to be very bias reporting.

Re: Zipperheads
Just to be clear over 100 Canadians have died in Mexico during this time period. It is 15 that have been verified as being from a criminal action. The rest have been from MVA's, drownings, hotel explosions, etc.

Sorry Bob, but the CBC was reporting violent crimes, not the above, and there has been a hell of a lot more than 15 in Wpg alone. We live here year round and get kind of sick of the constent dissing Mexico gets. That is not to say that there is a lot of other crimes releated to Mexico's so call war on drugs, but there not talking about that either.

Re: Zipperheads
The latest one in Huatulco is a a very strange case. I just saw a lengthy report on CBC news. Far too long to try and explain. It now involves the ex-husband flying down and discovering many bodies (including that of his ex-wife and her boyfriend) buried on a deserted beach. I expect there will be more reports circulating on the net tomorrow. Stay tuned on this one.
BTW....How many tourists have been murdered in Winnipeg or all of Canada for that matter? That would be a more comparable number IMO?

Re: Zipperheads
The man that was killed in Ajijic, the man that was killed in Melaque, and many more of the 15 were not tourists, they lived here.

Re: Zipperheads
True, but many were also tourists. The man in Melaque was a snowbird I believe. If you want to just compare citizens, Mexico has had over 40,000 killed in the past 5 years. A few more than Canada?

BTW......I am a strong proponent of Mexico and will be there permanent in 2 months. I am just being a realist here........
Over on this Mexconnect thread I am debating the other side of the coin..........

Re: Zipperheads
Got to agree with you on the 40,000 (or more) but living here one does get kind of tired of the sensational nature of the Canadian press when it comes to reporting on Mexico

Re: Zipperheads
Totally agreed. It seems to get sensationalized in the US when one of their citizens is killed as well. I suppose it is of interest since it is such a huge tourist destination. It sells newspapers.
I do believe that the situation in Mexico has deteriorated over the past 18 months. I don't for a minute think that "gringos" are specifically being targeted however I do believe that the unofficial "hands off the gringos" rule amongst the bad guys is fading. The Mexican tourist industry is going to get hammered hard if the situation doesn't improve.....IMO.

Re: Zipperheads
I lived in Corvallis Oregon for 30 years. It is called one of the safest cities in
the US. I was president of an old neighborhood and I use to carry a 45 when
I walked the neighborhood at night. Mental illness, Meth and other drugs,
with the problems of the new homeless made my neighborhood much more
dangerous than here IMHO. If you think I am paranoid about my old home
it was the cops that suggested I carry and it did work as I no longer was
asked where they could get meth and other such innappropriate questions.
We finally did get things cleaned out but that included the harmless homeless
as they could not favor one or the other and so we pushed the problem
somewhere else.

I came here from rural Beavercreek, Oregon. In the year preceeding our departure a meth lab was discovered in some forest land nearby.

Re: Zipperheads
Why would expats living in Mexico be so much on the defensive when the Canadian press reports and documents the death of Canadians in Mexico.
Most all Canadians are bombarded by the Mexican Tourist Industry about how beautiful and enjoyable a Mexican holiday is, the beaches, sun, sea. tequila, et al.
Mexico is very nice and enjoyable but at present there are dangers to the average tourist who is there for a good time but not a long time and there without having much knowledge about what is going on or having followed any news of the problems on or surrounding the drug corridors.
The majority of Canadian tourist in Mexico are "babes in the woods" and need all the information they can get before going.
Hiding the present dangers helps no one, except, maybe those who would rather not know in order to feel better for some reason.

I think a lot of people suspend their usual carefulness when they go on these bucolic beach vacations and fail to recognize that ANY tourist destinations tend to attract MORE criminals because that is where the money is at.
