We have another 18 months and will continue to monitor things. We got back from 17 days in the Yucatan Peninsula, driving around, taking buses, etc and we felt plenty safe, particularly in Merida, where we plan to move.

Plans can change, though.

We don´t care as we have no plans to sell and leave and even if we did decide to sell and leave, we could easily recoup our investment of ten years ago which is why we limited our initial home investment amount to a sum of money that did not render us house poor.

We are not house poor either and could easily recoup our investment and then some.

In my opinion, it is still too soon to buy real estate here but if I were in the market, I would drive a very hard bargain.

Eventually, homeowners will realize that they are not going to make a killing on their real property investments for several reasons including crime here and the economic catastrophe in the U.S. which wiped out home equities up there.

The economies in the US have nothing to do with it. The rich Mexicans and Canadians will be buying the properties here. Those two countries have not fallen on hard times like the US.

Add to that the fact that you can buy real estate in many sunbelt areas in the U.S. for a fraction of what you would have Paid in 2000 and Lakeside is no bargain by a long shot.

Oh yeah, buy in AZ and pay $ 1,000. a month AVERAGE for electricity to cool your house. That adds up fast. How about the horrible high and low temps in some of those States. You cannot do without heating AND A/C.

If I were to decide to move here during these turbulent times, I would definitely rent and lay low until these morons lower their prices to reasonable levels.

By the way, we consider it entirely incorrect to assert that crime is no worse here than it has been in recent memory. It is much worse here than when we arrived in 2001. Much worse and the crime that is occurring is much more violent generally speaking. There is a breakdown in civility and law enforcement - always weak and incompetent - can´t even begin to handle this new wave of criminality. Lock your doors and turn on that alarm."

Crime here is no worse. Most of the killings are drug cartel members killing each other or those who are involved with drugs, dealers and buyers. It's just publicized more. It is still far worse in any city NOB.

Careful John. Some of us still have good enough working memory to remember your postings about your various maladies and the medications that you take. The same would be true with your postings about just how reasonable your investment was in your home. At $20K incremental reductions, you have a long way to go to set a reasonable price. Good thing there are your favorite "newbies" around who don't know the history!

cheenagringo - You haven't seen this house or it's location so you can't make that comment. We are in no hurry to sell. We don't have to be. Not all houses here are created equal.

Most of the crap I see on MLS isn't worth it. Too old and not properly maintained. I wouldn't live in most of them especially considering the sh*tty areas of Lakeside they are located in.

I hope you're not serious about the trailer. I wouldn't live in a trailer if you paid me. They're made out of prefab sh*t. And trailer trash lives in trailers. And you obviously didn't read my ad closely because you're incorrect. Sorry, the great whelbarrow was sold 3 weeks ago and the owner is thrilled to use a US wheelbarrow instead of the Mexican crap they sell here. If you knew anything about wheelbarrows you would know the difference.

Listen, if that double-wide is in Barstow CA, by definition that means that it is located in only the very best neighborhood there. And my Mexican wheelbarrow is a low-rider and has one of those bouncy set ups. You won't get that from Detroit.

Keep your sense of humor John, when all else fails it will serve you well. Good luck with your house sale. Small word of advice, if your price is that close to $500K, $499 will attract a lot more attention.

Would those be the National Geographic 3D slides with the huge African tits from Ouagadougou circa 1937 or would that be the Sears Catalogues without which one would need a nearby oak tree with leaves with which to wipe one´s butt in the outhouse?

Dawg always thought Barstow was a splendid urban presence in the middle of the desert on the way from Vegas to L.A. where weekly wages earned in L.A. could be wiped out in Vegas in a few hours thereby necessitating a full gas tank in order to get back to San Berdoo without breaking down in Indio with no gas and not even enough money for a drink and burger at the Big Orange.
