The BIG VOTE in Mexico is Tomorrow, Wed. 11 Sept.
AMLO's controversial Judicial "reform" Constitutional Amendment will be voted on by the Senate. The House has already approved it.
AMLO's party Morena is only ONE vote short of the needed number for passage. Late breaking news suggests that a PAN Senator may defect and vote with Morena. What political intrigue!
AMLO's amendment has been universally assailed by most Countries including USA and Canada. It would make almost all judges in MX, including those in its Supreme Court to be elected by popular vote.
The weakening of the peso in recent weeks has been tied to this amendment as it will halt commercial investment in MX due to businesses being unwilling to expend capital in a country whose entire Judicial system may be thrown into chaos.
Here is a google translation of a story at El Universal's website.

Hours before voting on judicial reform, judges and magistrates demand that the opposition not give in and go against AMLO's initiative
Opposition senators are called upon to be patriotic and stand firm in voting against the reform of the Judicial Branch being discussed in the Upper House.
Judges and magistrates called on opposition senators to be patriotic and stand firm in voting against the judicial reform being discussed in the Senate , warning that otherwise we would move towards authoritarianism and the loss of freedoms.
Hugo A. Bermúdez, magistrate of the Second Auxiliary Collegiate Court of the Tenth Region residing in Saltillo, Coahuila, emphasizes that it is a matter of defending the rule of law , judicial independence, and democratic regularity in Mexico.
He argues that the impact of this reform would be so great that if one of the 43 senators voted in favor of it, it would be talking about a change of government regime.
"We would undoubtedly move towards authoritarianism, the loss of freedoms and the loss of real and effective control of the arbitrariness of the other two powers, including the Judicial Power itself, with a Judicial Power that is totally repressed in this way.
"We would be talking about the concentration of power in a single man, the President of the Republic and soon the President of the Republic," he said.
This indicates that they are aware of the strong and overwhelming pressures that senators are receiving regarding their position on the reform.
“We ask that as Senators of the Republic they do everything possible to maintain their position… We demand that the 43 senators maintain their vote against judicial reform, and that this is their democratic obligation,” he stressed.
This after it was revealed that Miguel Ángel Yunes, would join Morena in approving the reform.
Claudia Elena Hurtado de Mendoza Godínez, Second District Judge for Administrative Matters in Nuevo León, residing in Monterrey, points out that they call on opposition senators to respect the will of their electorate, maintain the separation of powers and the judicial career.
In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL , the judge points out that it must be a struggle to have a reform that is truly comprehensive and that seeks to solve the justice problems of this country.
"The reform they presented definitely does not have that objective, then, the call is for unity, respect, but above all, a sense of patriotism and nationalism of awareness of the importance of saying no to this reform," he asserts.
Questioned about the possibility that PAN Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez could be the one to give Morena and its allies the vote they need to approve the reform, the judge called on Morena, the Green Party and the Labor Party to realize that the interest of the nation is more important than political revenge.
“It is time to be brave and honest with the decisions we make and it is important to look out for the common good,” he says.
Judge María Carmen López, of the fourth district court of the Auxiliary Center of the Ninth Region (Zacatecas) with jurisdiction throughout the Republic, says that the reform would be a tremendous setback.
He said that if the reform were approved, the people of Mexico would be the ones to suffer from not having judges with so many years of training.
“In my case, I have 28 years of judicial experience, I have prepared to be a district judge all my life… The one who loses is the Mexican people because they lose prepared judges, judges with a vocation, judges who love justice, judges who defend human rights because that has been our lifelong training.
“Then there would be a great crisis for justice in Mexico, which is why there is so much instability in the markets and in investments, because without career judges, impartial justice is not guaranteed and that generates so much insecurity that the markets have been moving and the price of the dollar,” he says.

Interesting but not surprising about the possible PAN Senator voting for AMLO's Constitutional Amendment.
The full Senate vote is due sometime today.

Earlier Tuesday, Yunes Marquez requested a leave of absence for health reasons, missing the debate in which the reform was presented in the Senate. In the afternoon he joined the session to express his support for the bill.
Senators of the PAN party said that since Monday he was unreachable, suspecting that the ruling coalition was pressuring him to support the plan. Political columnists had reported that party officials offered to eliminate investigations against his family on alleged corruption cases in exchange for his vote in favor of the reform.

From the NY Times:
NY Times wrote:It will now go to the state legislatures, where it will need a majority to be enacted into law. Mr. López Obrador’s governing Morena party and its allies control 25 of 32 state legislatures, so it is expected to be approved with ease.
The debate, which started on Tuesday, was temporarily suspended after a group of protesters, megaphones and Mexican flags in hand, barged into the Senate building calling on senators to block the overhaul. Protesters followed the lawmakers to another venue, where an opposition senator was assaulted when someone threw gasoline on his face. Police officers later dispersed demonstrations using fire extinguishers.
After a heated session in which legislators accused each other of being “traitors” and “liars,” 86 senators approved the bill and 41 voted against it. The Senate must still resolve several disputed provisions in the bill before it can go to the state legislatures.
López Obrador’s successor, Claudia Sheinbaum, takes office on Oct. 1 and has fully backed the plan.

Done!
Does the current Mexican Supreme Court not have the option to look at this? Possibly ruling that it is 'unconstitutional'?

How can a new Constitution Amendment be unconstitutional? It's not a bill or a law, it's a new Amendment. Once adopted, it becomes part of the Constitution itself.
From what I read about the US Constitution is that amendments can be challenged by SCOTUS if it were found to not be adopted according to how amendments become amendments (# of votes needed; # of states needed; irregularities of some sort).
Not a clue as to how it works in MX.
Guessing it could be repealed??
