Great Tamale News
One of the problems with tamale places is that they seem to open in strange places at strange hours. There is now a place that is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from about 1 - 6. It's on the carretara in Ajijic about a block west of Vinos America, and it's part of a roadside vegetable stand. The woman who runs it is Rosario Ayala, and they are very good. $20 each, and she has rez, pollo, rajas (veggie) y fraises. I live right below them and I'm a tamale nut, so I want them to keep it up. So go and buy!!!

Thanks for the tip! Another popular place is off a truck/cart around 8:30AM most days on Revolucion next to Scallions. Sorry don't know exact schedule.

Not to be a scold, but for future reference the local language for this is:

Singular: Tamal
Plural: Tamales
fyi, no such word as Tamale around here

There is a truck that rolls around Riberas del Pilar with a loudspeaker... "Tamales, Tamales, llegaron los tamales". Female voice but I've never tried the product.

Most nights there's a man walking lower Ajijic at the malecón and on streets near it, yelling "Tamal! Tamal!" He used to sell out of a wheelbarrow years ago now he sells out of drywall buckets.

Also see young boys selling out of baskets, but they don't shout out, stop at houses and ring bells where I assume they have repeat customers. Sometimes they sell the local Ajijic bread, sometimes tamales.

The best tamales I have found are in Riberas. On the lake side outside the Oxxo beside the Pemex station a young woman sells tamales after 7 at night and MF. They are kept in a large ice chest to keep them warm. She does not make them but sells them for another woman. Very popular among the Mexicans. Her corn tamales (elote) are the best ever.

Is she on the side street, almost behind OXXO?
