Dia del Trabajo (1 May) Public Holiday - Sunday

Labor Day (Día del Trabajo), also known as May Day (Primero de Mayo), is a public holiday in Mexico on Sunday May 1.

Since this particular Mexican holiday falls on a Sunday (a non-working day), do gardeners, housekeepers and other staff observe the day on Monday in order to get a paid day off work?

Good question! I don’t know the answer but my gardener comes on Monday.

It actually is a communist holiday Labor day and women s day , we celebrate the same in France. It is also the day we offer each other lily of the valley,,,
Here on the 3rd I believe is the Day of the Cross followed by Cinquo de Mayo which is also a paid holiday.. When are they celebrating it? The Following Monday or Friday or the previous Monday?

According to article 74 of the Mexican Federal Labor Law, employees are not to work on the federally mandated holidays.

If an employee works on a federal holiday in Mexico. The employee must be paid their regular pay plus double time. In other words, triple pay for the day.

But May 1 is a Sunday. Do workers on Monday get triple pay?

The “staff” do not decide what day they observe a holiday on “in order to get a paid day off.” The government mandates when the holiday will be observed. I guess they do that in order that hard working folks actually have a day of rest with pay which is the intent of the holidays.
