Post by dvinton Thu Apr 15, 2021 3:28 pm

Is there anyone Lakeside/GDL who does 35mm to digital slide copying?

A friend of mine has around 3500 35mm slides from the '60s and '70s he'd like preserved.

Certainly no one locally. Perhaps an automated online service he could ship a box to. I have seen some starting at 44c PER slide. My Brother did roughly 1200 photos recently. Took over a year at odd times of the day, using a special photo/slide scanner doing 4 at a time. With specially-purchased software that separated the multiscans into separate files. Each scan can take up to 2 minutes at high res, AFTER properly placing the photos. Slides also need to be inserted into a frame to place them at the right distance/focal point from the platen, which adds considerably to the time involved.

I ran across this article from October of last year... #5 may be an option for you.

The problem with any of those methods is he has 3,500 slides. Would take a lifetime of boring repetition.

I thought that too but was wondering if ALL of those slides were actually worth doing? Perhaps the first step is just buying a small hand held viewer to see each slide first?

All,

Thank you for your responses.

My friend wants these images preserved to pass on to his kids. I suggested some sorting/prioritization might be a good idea as it could reduce the number (greatly, in my mind). But, I don't think that'll happen. ;)

A search of "Servicio de copia de diapositivas 35mm Guadalajara" turned up a company in Mexico set up for copying lots of slides.

He's from Oregon and makes a yearly trip (except last year) back to visit family and friends. I found several companies in the Portland area that'll do the job for him.

As an aside, digitizing slides (and negatives) is very, very time-consuming. I'm in the process of scanning some 8000 black and white negatives I shot back in the '70s... It's a several-year project.

I agree Amazon is a great place to shop. Another place to check out is B&H Photo. I've found the product reviews helpful and the sales staff very knowledgeable. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=slide%20copier&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps

Great link! This product caught my eye on it. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1634150-REG/braun_64400_reflecta_combo_album_scan.html/overview

It looks like it will be available soon. Two things about it... 1) scans and digitizes in under two seconds and 2) you don't need a computer because it scans to an SD card and there are SD cards that will hold 32 GB. Cool! You could then use a card reader to put it into a computer and then download to as many USB flash drives as you have family members.

I have done it (converted slides and negatives to digital images). 3,500 is far more than I did but do a little at a time and eventually it gets done. A problem nobody has mentioned is that even tiny specks of dust create problems and get transferred to the digital image and then it is back to Photoshop to fix it and that takes lots of time - you have to look at it as a long term project. The image conversion was surprisingly good. But the f....king dust :(.

B&H photo is awesome. They also sell DJI drone parts. I have purchased thousands of dollar's of drone parts from them to repair our mining survey drones. They ship to Mexico no problem.
