Bad Habits
Well... We're 6 weeks away from our arrival Lakeside. There's a lot we will have to learn when we get there, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if tobacco and tubes are available for those of us that prefer to make our our cigarrettes?
No lectures please... I've heard them all.

I think I may have seen these supplies at Paz liquor/tobacco store.

Re: Bad Habits
Nope, they have papers and tobacco but no tubes. It's probably possible in Guadalajara, but no guarantees.
Now for the good news, cigs are cheap here, at least compared to Canada, $353 Mexican pesos per carton. About $27 CAD. for 10 packs. IMO they're much better cigarettes too, none of those crappy additives which make the cigarette go out.
Soooo, Dude, you're in smoke heaven.
The bad news, not too many places where you can go out to eat and have a cigarette, however since many of the restaurants aren't all that wonderful, cook at home, save a fortune and eat like a king. Alternatively there's always takeout.
You'll never get any lectures from me. Check out this honey of a website.

Re: Bad Habits
A good friend of mine from the State of Queretaro recently went through the drill and ended up having to get his tubes, rolling machine and tobacco in Texas.
As to the current Mexican Government smoking ban in restaurants, we found compliance to be somewhat spotty in many areas where we traveled. Now there is a real surprise! Rules and regulations in Mexico tend to be suggestions. I would have expected total compliance in enclosed restaurants but found many who bent the rules by claiming open air conditions. We typically check out any table in close proximity and even if outside, we won't smoke unless we see the same being done. Sure we are smokers but we don't smoke inside our house and try to be considerate to others around us.

Yes, the cigarettes are cheaper here...but I liked it better when they were only 125 pesos a carton. (big whine!)
The good news is that you'll live longer as a smoker in Mexico ...because you don't have to go outside and freeze your ass off and end up with pneumonia...the weather's always nice here.

I remember when Delicados were 80 centavos a pack. The rest of the peso paid for a book of matches. Faros were even cheaper.

When we first started making trips to the Lake, Marlboros were $110MXN at Paz.

Re: Bad Habits
First trip lakeside I stayed in a nice room w/bath, private patio and entrance near the plaza Ajijic for 100 pesos a night, but that was when a peso was a peso and cigs were too cheap not to smoke.

We make our own tacos, they're really good, and it doesn't need to be tuesday. Plus nobody is going to tell us not to smoke in our own house.

I always liked Taco Time's soft tacos. I was in Tokyo when they first opened there.

Re: Bad Habits
BTW C.B. where can you buy roll your own supplies in Canada? We're tired of paying $100 a carton while visiting. The 2 carton limit for both of us runs out fast.

Hocks & CB:
What no green chili cheeseburgers? Wendy's, BK, MD's and virtually all the other burger chains have them this time of year in NM.

Just about any grocery store. There are also smoke shops & some drugs stores (depending on the province). Just about anywhere they sell cigs. Even some of the corner stores have the supplies however never asked at 7-11. I am looking forward to the $35.00 cartons.........
Re: Bad Habits
C.B. you're looking forward to $27 a carton. I'm wondering about uptight Ontariariario.

Re: Bad Habits
So, how long you going for? I once took four cartons with me because I didn't know how long I would be there (looking out for my mum). Being the dutiful uptight ex-Ontariarian that I am, I declared the other two. Well, upon inspection, the duty officer heaved a great sigh and told me not to bother next time. Reading between the lines... "Geez Lady, give me a break, I have more important people to bust and you're wasting my freakin' time." I went on my way and paid nothing extra.
I guess the question is...how much duty would you be charged on the extra cartons that you took with you?...assuming that you had a receipt to show how much you paid for them. Even if it was 100% more, you'd still be paying less for a carton of smokes than if you bought them there.
And, sorry, I have no idea where to get papers and tinned tobacco anymore...you could try the yellowpages.ca under "Tobacconists"

Probably a couple of weeks ferret, so yes, I'll definitely try the 4 carton bit. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ya think? They're not all for me, 2 smokers C.B., plus once we were detained for an additional 5 days unexpectedly. I'm not too fond of Canadian smokes anymore either, they have some stuff in them which makes them go out easy. Best to declare and take our chances.

Here's another one. There's a reference on this website http://retireearlylifestyle.com/chapala_living_costs.htm
to home delivery of Cervesa. Does anyone here take advantage of this?

Just a call to "Fiesta Time" is all it takes. Works like a charm.

Re: Bad Habits
Thanks David but I have no idea what or where Fiesta Time is. Is it a store or a liquor delivery service? Any idea of prices or a contact number?
We've only been in Chapala 3 weeks and don't know our way around the whole area yet.

Re: Bad Habits
Fiesta Time is a beer shop at the corner of the Libramiento and Colon in Ajijic. There must a place in Chapala that delivers. Just look around. The word for deliveries is "pedidos."
