Download or stream old movies?
Does anybody know where or how to make this happen? Just at random, Popeye with Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall for example. Sort of like an online video store that still has plenty of healthy dvds for rent.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
The Pirate Bay is where I download my movies. I extract them with Qbit torrents program.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
If you have a Roku, it is loaded with free movies and TV shows. It does take some digging, though. And during this lockdown period, many of the channels are offering 90-day free passes. I just watched the very first Bonanaza episode on the Roku channel. It was hilarious, not because it was old, but because they just liked to write a comedy episode every now and then. I didn't realize that the burning map and the music were different then.
One channel I discovered that is fantastic is Turner Classic Movies, entirely free. And better than the TV channel, because everything is classified and sorted by year, genre, and stars.
If you are interested, roku.com lists all the channels. There is lots of free live news, too. I got a new Roku last week from Amazon.com.mx. It's not for everyone, and I have other methods and ways to watch, but it is an option. And it's way more stable than an Android "box", and has a lot more to offer than a Firestick.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
I haven't used Pirate Bay for quite a while. Mostly because it was a P.I.T.A. trying to find which of their sites was working. I use LimeTorrents mostly and download through Bittorents. With iLox, I can download an hour long show (really 42 minutes) in under three minutes. However, I've been doing this since 2009 (started with Graboid) and am comfortable with the whole process and know who are the reputable uploaders and the format I want. It's a learning curve. I also download books and convert them to the format I need using Calibre.
I got rid of StarChoice (or whatever it's called now) in 2015 and have never looked back.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
On Feb 21, 2001 Star Choice which already existed up north started broadcasting on Satellite A1 which could be received as far south as central America. And Frankly I love it. I already had it up north at the family cottage (summer home) on Vancouver Island.
So I brought an extra receiver down earlier that year after going north for Christmas and coming back from up North.
Going up north three times per year I enjoy watching the news from what I used to call my home town and I still do.
Sure I could spend a little extra time and stream my programming. But it is so much simpler just to use my Shaw Direct (new name for Star Choice) receiver. Oh and I am given a large discount. 30% to be exact. How do I get that discount? I am billed in Canadian dollars and pay in US dollars. At the present time the US exchange rate gives me that.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
I'm dumping Shaw at the end of the year. They don't have any good channels left.

If I had to go back to watching commercials, I would tear my hair out. I did sign up for MLB to live stream games but they were mostly in the afternoon when I'm napping so I cancelled it. I have no idea what's going on in sports any more... but then there's no sports at the moment so it's no biggee.
And I agree CBob about Shaw (thank you for the correct name)... it's a lotta bucks for no bang.

How anyone still can still tolerate commercials is a mystery to me. TV is a dinosaur.

In Switzerland we did not have commercials but we did have to pay a yearly fee to the "Television Suisse Romande". From memory it was very low.

Most of the new streaming services include commericals, even when you pay for them. Big services, like CBS All Access.

Stream with Kodi, Seren and a real-debrid account. Works terrific. Real debrid is about 5USD / mo. Movies and TV, no commercials.
But it's a bummer when no internet

Re: Download or stream old movies?
I wouldn't have Shaw if I did not return up north 3 times per year. For that reason I also watching my (up there) local news. I also enjoy CNN and every once in a while I get my kicks out of that right wing comedy channel, called Fake Fox News.
Oh and HoneyBee, I just noticed where you came from, When I used to live in Oberammergau, Bavaria, we used to drive to Stilfser Joch to go snow skiing on the weekends in the summer. Those were the good old days. It was right on the Swiss-Italian border. And I loved that curvy road on the Italian side going up to the Ski Resort

The vast majority of my customers are retired folk with no zest for computers. Android boxes, Kodi, VPNs are just too complicated for them, and in fact for anyone who doesn't want to dedicate multiple hours to this stuff. Something like Real Debrid would have them running for the hills in seconds.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
CG, is there a good streaming service that has a guide. I don't mind paying for it but a guide is pretty handy.

Pete, I had to use google map to figure out were Stilfser Joch is. You are right about the road. Many Swiss mountain passes have those switch back roads, just do not go over the edge !. While I was looking, close by is the town of St Moritz for the very wealthy. But just up the road is the lake of Silvaplana. I use to go there many times in the Summer to WindSurf. The lake is fed by a glacier but the great part is that it has "thermal winds" so around 11 am every morning there were fantastic winds which lasted all day. You are right those were the good old days.

Oh I agree and personally don't recommend it to any of my friends that are technically challenged. But really, I've been on Kodi for several years and it has been rewarding, yet painful. But the latest Kodi, with the Seren add-on and a real-debrid account is excellent.
Re: Download or stream old movies?
I've been using uTorrent to download for ages because it's kinda been an industry standard forever. After reading a couple comments here - CBob using Qbit, Ferret downloading a 42-minute show in minutes, I decided to check out qbit. I'm friggin' stunned! Qbit downloads TEN TIMES faster than utorrent for me!! This is the coolest news I've had in months. Thanks y'all!

Re: Download or stream old movies?
Question: I downloaded the movie "Frida" via Microsoft Movies and lo and behold when I tried to play the movie I was told that I needed Windows 8. 8.1 or10! I have Windows 7 professional which is not updated or secured any more by Microsoft and I have no intention of forking out hundreds of dollars to upgrade! Any tips on how to get a refund?

Frida is on Netflix. No Microsoft needed, no commercials, stream or download, no CBS whatever needed, 6 bux a month, boom.

I probably need a vpn with my Canadian Netflix as I can only get the "Trotsky" series!

Re: Download or stream old movies?
Mexican Netflix (which as Trailrunner points out is cheap in US bucks compared to being in the US) gets all the new Netflix movies. What it doesn't get is a lot of old stuff, like Cheers, that a lot of people don't care about anyway. And of course no need for a VPN.

Re: Download or stream old movies?
No problema. Being a pirate from the early days I have tried almost all the torrent software. Been using Qbit for about 3 years now with no complaints. With Ilox I downloaded a 13gb series in about 30 minutes. Telmex would have been hours.....DuckieHoomever wrote:I've been using uTorrent to download for ages because it's kinda been an industry standard forever.
