A brulee torch. Have not seen one here.

Any hardware store will sell you a propane torch. It does not have to be a special "chef's torch".

Re: Chef's Torch
Well, why didn't we think of that?
Killing a mosquito with a cannon is not the answer. A brulee torch is much easier to deal with, has an electric start, uses less fuel, has a very nice adjustable flame, and... well, it looks a damn-sight nicer, too. I could use a flat-tipped screwdriver to turn a Phillips-head screw, but I prefer the right tool.
Honestly, we're not all five-year olds here.

Yeah. I would order the proper torch from Amazon. There's a very BIG difference between the tool that welds things and caramelizing brown sugar on creme brulee.

Re: Chef's Torch
Once, years ago, we were having a dinner party. My wife who is a chef par excelence, was making creme brulee. At that time she did not have a chef's torch. I gsve her my propane torch to use, and it made a fine crust - except for the tiny bits of solder that melted into the crusts.
The next week I bought her a proper one.

These torches are usually available in plumbing stores, such as casa de plomeros, they are used for silver soldering. The last time I bought one, in a Canadian Tire store, they were in a locked glass case, they were/are highly prized with drug users, especially cannabis "dabbers".

Re: Chef's Torch
Had to get a welder's torch. Chef torches can be had in Guad probably where chefs hang out but not here. ML has them and they run around 1500 pesos and Amazon sells them in the 20 US range but don't ship to MX. Could have a friend bring me down one but I don't think you can fly with a little butane bomb in your luggage. Dunno . . .
The basic difference between the 2 is that chef torches look better, are handier, have an electric ignition, and have a small cannister of butane already attached.
What I got is a cannister of butane that will outlive me and an attachment with a regulater that has to be lit with a lighter. Less than 200 pesos.
I'm terrified to use it.

Re: Chef's Torch
Trailrunner,
If you are unsure about using the 'sparker' to light your torch, here is a simple way to guarantee that it will light and not scare you:
Turn on a front burner on your gas range and set the flame on high.
Hold the nozzle of the torch close to the flame and turn the knob counterclockwise. Your torch should light, and you may step back from the stove.

Just curious, is this for something you're cooking or is it for your art work?

Art work. Torching the paint pops the air bubbles and can bring out more color.
